RELIGION BANNED BY MEXICAN LAW.
EDUCATION SEPARATED ENTIRELY FROM CHURCHES.

President Calles to-day proclaimed "egulations giving effect to the constitutional prohibition of religious teachng in private schools. These regulations are supplementary to religious aws which come into effect at the end 3f the month, giving the Government complete power to regulate churches and schools henceforth. No minister of any- religious cult may act as director of. or teacher in, * private school, and the. use of chapels, oratories or other places of religious s-orship as schools is banned. <~ onsequent on these regulations ana religious persecution, many religious, especially Roman Catholics, have been forced- to leave Mexico and take refuge in the United States. President Plutarco Elias Calles. who is a military man and was a general in the slexi can armv, succeeded General Alviro Obregon on July 7. 1924. Education is free, compulsory and secular. There are 744 private schools, all of which are affected by the new laws.
