TERRIFIC TORNADO SWEEPS NEW YORK; DAMAGE ENORMOUS.
20-MINUTE WIND STORM TAKES TOLL OF LIFE AND PROPERTY, WRECKING ALL IN ITS PATH. B - Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. (Received July 24, 9.50 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 23. The most devastating wind storm ever known in eastern New York took several lives and caused enormous property damage. Houses and barns were wrecked, and trees blown down, while the damage to crops alone is estimated at 250,000 dollars. A girl was killed by a falling tree. A labourer was crushed to death when a shed collapsed, and another was killed when a live wire fell.
Many were injured by falling trees, when trapped in automobiles. The highway between Albany and Schenectady is completely blocked by trees, measuring two to three feet in diameter. The trolley service is completely disrupted, and also telegraph communications.
Crops, in many instances, were completely levelled. Many windows were blown outward and broken, and one small cottage was lifted entirely from its foundation and deposited a few feet away, a complete wreck. Many houses were partially wrecked. The whole tornado lasted less than twenty minutes.
