COUNCIL COMMENTS. Cr A. H. Glasson has been appointed Chairman of Reserves, in the place of ex-Cr Langford. Captain A. W. Owles has presented 100 trees to be planted in the Sports Ground, Rawhiti Domain. The native shrubs presented by Mr A. W. Baxter have been planted on the Esplanade, between Bowhill Road and Rawhiti Avenue. Seventeen pine trees are to be cut down in the Rawhiti Domain opposite Mr Winterburn's property. Tenders have been called for the much-discussed road roller for the Borough. Beware, speed fiends, the Council are watching you in the Borough. The sea walls in front of the North and Central Surf Clubs will be built with stone in place of concrete. CONCERT. A successful concert in aid of the St. Faith's Church Choir fund was held in Joyland Theatre on Thursday- evening. Miss Lillian Hanham, who is the possessor of a fine soprano voice, sang in place of Madame Gower Burns, who was indisposed. The items of Miss Judith Mathias, violin soloist, were very- much appreciated by- the large audience. The singing of the choir reflected much credit on Mr Stanford, the choirmaster. Mr Rex Hobbs sang in place of Mr Farmer, who was indisposed. MINIATURE RIFLES. In the shoot of the New Brighton Ladies bn Saturday, Mrs Buschl and Mrs M Clelland each received a point for the Senior Pendant, the Junior Pendant being won by Miss M. Diehl and the Tisdall Broo<-h by Airs Nicholls with 29. The best scores were Mrs Buschl 32. 31, Mrs M’Clelland 32, Mrs Ball 31. Miss Park 31, Mrs Moses 30 Miss M. Diehl 30. A motion of sympathv with Mr Hudson (a club vice-president.) on the death of his mother, was passed. The Beresford Club held their week. . euc hre and dance in the Pier Hall Monday. Prizes were won by Mr Shaw Mrs Moody, Mr L. Frost, Mrs Vrost'. Mr Mortan and Mr Burmister next the prizes include stainless knives and so on. ' \ whist drive will be held in the •'Oasis'' Tea Rooms on Tuesday next.

[ CHILDREN’S SOCIAL, j The Sunday School scholars assemblj ed in full force at the social in the Parish Hall on Monday evening, the atj tendance probably being a record, and from the enthusiasm displayed there is no doubt the kiddies thoroughly- enjoyed themselves. Air L. Ward, in his usual able manner, directed the games, competitions, etc. Items were also rendered by- the following:—Voy Barrett, song and dance; Connie Weyman, recitation; Loraine and Jack Branch, also Clem and Jean Rondel, pianoforte duets; and Air S. Cloderhay, songs. The Sunday School teachers and members of the vestry assisted in the arrangements. After refreshments were served an enjoyable evening concluded with the National Anthem. PERSONAL. A public meeting, to make arrangements for some recognition of the services of the retiring head master, Mr G. W. Bishop, was held in the New Brighton Schoolroom on Tuesday evening. The Alayor, Air J. Gamble, presided. On the motion of the Alayor it was decided that the movement should include residents of the Borough, local organisations, ptij 1 s and ex-pupils of the school. The following executive was appointed to further the effort:—Chairman and treasurer, Mr J. Gamble; secretary. Air S. C. Thompson; members of executive, Alesdames Bellamy-, N. It was decided that a meeting of subscribers would be held at the end of August to decide the form the presentation should take. George Street, who has been seriously ill, is slowly recovering. NORTH BEACH NOTES. J SCHOOL. The North Brighton School re-opened on Monday; the attendance is still ma- | terially affected through the epidemic of influenza, but it was not considered necessary to close the school for a further period. PRESENTATION TO AIR G. W. BISHOP. A meeting of the members of the North Brgihton School Committee was held on Thursday evening. The chairman (Air E. Leaver) and Airs Reid, who had attended the public meeting called bv the Mayor, explained the decision of the meeting. Arrangements were made for canvassing the whole of the North Brighton School district. It was also decided to ask the teachers to invite the children to contribute one penny each towards the presentation fund. „ SEA WALL. The excavations for the concrete sea wall were commenced on Alonday last. By Thursday some forty feet of boxing. 4ft Gin deep, had been completed, and a start was made with the filling in of rubble and concrete at the north end j of the North Beach Surf Club’s pan- 1 lion. Unfortunately about midday the

high tides carried everything away except a few feet of the concrete. The timber was salvaged by- the workmen. Considerable loss will be occasioned to the council, as the work is being done by workmen employ-ed by that body-. At the meeting of the Borough Council on Monday- evening last Councillors F. J. L. Scott and E. Leaver questioned the advisability of going on with the work till the dangerously- high tides were over. HOUSEHOLD PETS. There have been quite a number of fatalities to domestic pets at North Beach recently-. On July 16 Mrs Ivan Lamb’s valuable pet Sydney- Silkie Terrier, whilst crossing the Esplanade in front of her residence, was run over and died within five minutes from injuries received. Air W. M’Donald, of Swann Street, had his dog run over by a motor-cycle. Airs M. Slater’s terrier “Joey’’ died through a bone lodging across ist throat, and Airs W. A. Smith’s valuable dog died of pneumonia. Air A. Florance had to dispose of a tried and faithful servant in his old horse, “Prince.” This horse was purchased from Mr J. Buxton some ’ years ago, and prior to belonging to

Mr Buxton “Prince” saw service with the New Brighton Tramway Company in the old da} r s of the horse-drawn trams.
