SIXTY-FOUR MEN SELECTED FOR RELIEF WORKS.
TO REPORT FOR DUTY TO-MORROW MORNING..
An additional sixty-four men have been selected for relief works provided by the Citizens' Unemployment Committee. They have been notified to report at the Chester Street depot tomorrow morning, when they will.be allocated to various jobs. It is expected that about fifty only will report, and the following works have been arranged for them: Twenty-five to go to Bottle Lake Reserve, eleven to the work at Beckenham, six to the Sprevdon Domain, six to Stapleton’s Road, and one to the Richmond Domain. The men were selected yesterday afternoon by Messrs C. H. Hewlett. It Worrall and K. G. Queree. and include all the men then registered with two or more dependants, and eleven of those with one dependent only. POSITION OF SINGLE MEN. No single men were selected, the executive taking the view that if they dealt with all the married men, the Public Works Department would make available the work at Menzies Bay, which is to last two or three months, for single men. Yesterday afternoon Mr R. B. Owen, organiser of the Unemployment Committee, sent a telegram to the Minister of Public works, stating that at a meeting of the executive it was decided to again urge upon the Government the needs of single men, and that the committee _ would undertake the responsibility of caring for married men who are unemployed. As indicating that some of the unemployed single men are feeling the pinch, someone has scrawled “ What about the single men?” across a list of the men who were notified to report for relief work on Wednesday morning, which has been posted up outside the Trades Hall. TO-DAY’S REGISTRATIONS. Up till noon to-day fifteen new registrations were received at the Government Labour Bureau, comprising eight married men with a total of twenty-one dependents, and seven single men with two dependents. 1 The occupations of the men are as follow:—Ten labourers, two motor drivers, two gardeners and one hotel worker. Three men were sent to private employment. At the women’s branch the registrations have shown an easing tendency, one being received this morning. Three of those on the register were sent to positions.
