ERECTION OF UGLY RAILWAY HOARDINGS.
LOCAL AUTHORITIES TO BE CONSULTED. (Special to the “ Star. ”) WELLINGTON, July 21. A protest by the member for Auckland East against the Railway Department erecting unsightly hoardings in cities has drawn a reply from the Minister of Railways that the erection of advertising hoardings to the detriment of scenic beauty spots or in manner and situation as to constitute a source of danger to the public is not by the Railway Department. “ I am particularly desirous that as far as is reasonably practicable. the activities of the Department in this direction should be made to harmonise with the views of local authorities,” stated Mr Coates, “ and with this end in view explicit instructions have given that the local authority is to be informed of the Department’s intentions with regard to the erection of large advertising signs within a city or borough boundaries. The local authority will thus have the opportunity of making any representations it ma'- desire in respect gf any particular hoarding, and any objections which may be raised will have very careful consideration.”
