STUDENTS FAREWELL RHODES SCHOLAR.
MR M. BARAK ENTERTAINED AT ROLLESTON HOUSE. Last evening members of Rolleston House foregathered to . fare c "'f’’, n t f > Mr B. Barak. B.Sc., Rhodes Scholar, and late president of the House. The function took the form of a dinner. The president, Mr W. Boyden, was in the chair. The health of the guest of the evening was proposed by Mr A. R. Dunlop, whose remarks were endorsed by Messrs L C. Stephens and W. Boyden. Mr A. R. Dunlop said tnat Mr Barak had been a power in building Rolleston House to the position it held m Canterbury College to-day. He had introduced ’many reforms into the administrative side of a«airs. and many succeeding generations would benefit bv his unselfishness. Mr L. C. Stephens said that there w-tre two sides which appealed to everyone on such an occasion, the materialistic and idealistic. Tradition was a very important thing in an institution such as Rolleston House. No one could fail to benefit by association with his fellows in such an institution He paid a tribute to Mr Barak’s worl for the House and for Cahtefbury Col lege in general. Mr Boyden referred to the great interest Mr Barak had taken in the House. He presented the guest with a
silver wristlet watch from the members of the House. Mr Barak’s health was drunk with musical honours. Mr Barak received an ovation on rising to reply. He referred to some of his experiences in College life, and stated that it was only when one was leaving such a place that one remem bered these incidents so vividly. He emphasised the value of residential hostels in University life. College life did not consist merely in attending lectures and taking a degree There Was a much higher erucation than that to be derived from Canterbury Col lege. He concluded by exhorting all members to carry on the traditions of the House, and to keep it what it was —a force in the life of the University (Applause.)
