"I don’t suppose jazz music has found its way into the schools,” said a Dunedin inquirer to Mr E. Douglas Tayler, director of music to the Education Department. "I don’t know so much,” was the reply. “I have come across some very poor stuff being taught to the children.” Mr Taylor contrasted with this mistake the patient and admirable work of some of the teachers, who had gone to great pains when the occasion offered in copying by hand fragments of good music such as would appeal to the children.
