MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr 11. A. Young, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A female first offender for drunkenness was fined ss. A SERIOUS CHARGE. Francis Joseph Smith was charged with having indecently assaulted a female at North Brighton on May 19 last. The Chief-Detective asked for a remand. Mr Batchelor, who appeared for the accused, asked for bail, and requested that pending the hearing, accused's name should be suppressed. Chief-Detective Gibson objected to bail, pointing out that the charge was a very serious one. The Magistrate said that the case was not one for bail. He declined to order the suppression of the name. Accused was remanded till July 2. PILLION RIDING. Wong Soy was ordered to pay 7s costs for having ridden on a motorcycle otherwise than on the seat of it. TRUANCY CHARGES. A number of charges against parents of having failed to send children to school were called, the majority being withdrawn. Charges against J. Crofts, 11. W. Hills and G. C. Lidgett were adjourned. A. Reeves was fined 10s and costs. NEGLIGENT DRIVING. Leslie Pilkington Mills (Mr Lascelles) was charged with having driven a motor vehicle in a negligent manner, lie was fined £25 and costs. He pleaded guilty to the offence. Senior-Sergeant Martin stated that the defendant, who came from Dunedin, drove a car at thirty miles an hour along Cashel Street, and, when approaching Ollivier’s Road collided with another car. Mills's car gave the other a glancing blow and each skidded a considerable distance. It seemed that each driver had accelerated with the object of crossing in front of each other, but owing to the speed at which the defendant was driving a collision was inevitable. Mr Lascelles said that the defendant had already paid £3l for the damage suffered by the second car. “ Because the defendant is a salesman I will not suspend his license,” said the Magistrate, “ but I think it is a case for a substantial fine.”
