AUSTRALIA RATTLES UP GOOD Ist INNINGS SCORE.

MACARTNEY REACHES 160 AFTER FINE PARTNERSHIP WITH RICHARDSON.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.—Reuter's Telegrams. (Received June 22, noon.)

LONDON, June 21. Answering Lancashire's first innings score of 149, Australia made 374. C. G. Macartney reached 160 before being caught. In their second innings, Lancashire have lost five for 116.

The attendance was sixteen thousand. Macdonald presented no difficulties, lie had the entire field on the off-side, except on the mid on. Nevertheless, the batsmen several times found the boundary through them. Macartney’s and Richardson’s display of batting has so far been unsurpassedIddon and Tvlde'sley were played confidently. Macartney, who was at his top form, reached the century with a short single in 165 minutes. Richardson maintained the offensive. He sent Iddon to the boundary thrice in one over. Macdonald, whose length at the start was very faulty, continued variable, but it was off one of his short balls that Richardson was taken at third man. R. Tyldesley. who dived, brought off a brilliant catch, low down. The South Australian had batted a hundred minutes. He hit eight fours and was verv safe and vigorous all through. The total then was 234 for six wickets, the partnership having added 115 runs. Rwder was badly missed at first slip by Watson off the first ball from Macdonald. Macartney continued superbly* He drove or cut all the bowling alike. When thirteen, Ryder leg-glanced the ball to Duckworth, who mulled it badly. A couple of overs after the third century had been passed, Macartney, in essaying a risky cut from Parkin, a strol-p from which he had scored many runs, misjudged it, »nd was well taken jy Duckworth at he wicket. He had played glorious rricket all round, and was magnifi:ent on the offside. He received an ovation on returning to the pavilion. His Innings had lasted 125 minutes, and his score included fifteen fours. The board at this stage read 309 for seven wickets. Ryder, in attempting a leg hit, lifted the ball to short-leg. His innings was alwavs bright, and he drove powerfully. The closing stages were brightened by Oldfield's attractive display. His cutting was crisp and clean. Everett showed unexpected form, and brought off many good shots off Macdonald and Watson* The last wicket

the attack. To the former s first ball, a full toss, Makepeace weakly held out his bat and was well held by Oldfield. The batsmen avoided risks and scoring was slow. Hallows batted soundly, without being spectacular. Apart from a couple of boundaries early off Everett, his score mounted by singles and twos until he had the bad luck to be given out leg before, when he seemed well set. A lack of enterprise was manifested by the remaining batsmen. Many loose balls were allowed to pass unpunished, notably from Everett, who was unable to find his length. Such runs as accrued came from Mailey. The game became a dogged fight to keep up the wickets. Barnes, with a couple of nice drives "to the boundary off Mailey in one over, only once relieved the tedium. The scores were:—• LANCASHIRE. First Innings. 11. Makepeace, c and b Mailey .. S C.
