The death is announced from Sydney of Mr Smith Greenwell, a Maori war veteran, aged eighty-three. The Union Jack was . flown at halfmast above the building of Skelton, Frostick and Co., Ltd., to-day as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mrs Robert Allan, who was the wife of one of the senior partners of the firm. Mr P. N. Jeffre3'S, who is to succeed Mr R. M’Lennan in charge of the Union Steam Shin Company’s Trans-Pacific services department at Wellington, was a passenger from Vancouver by the Niagara to-da>’, says an Auckland Press Association telegram. Mr John Stewart and Mr J. M. Mitchell, two of the best known bowlers in Christchurch, will leave this evening b>* the ferry steamer for the north to connect with the American bound steamer. They will make their first call at Rarotonga, and for the next three months will journey around the South Seas Islands. To-day a number of bowlers representing several clubs, larewelled Mr Stewart and presented him with an article which would be of service in his island trip. Wishes for a good voyage were expressed b}’ Mr P. L. Davies, and supported by the large gathering present. The Acting Town Clerk of Wellington received Councillor A. L. Monteith’s resignation as a member of the City Council, to take effect from Monda>’ next. Councillor Monteith was some little time ago appointed the empkq’ees’ representative upon the Court of Arbitration, and as his duties take him away from Wellington a good deal he is unable to attend council meetings as he wishes. He has been a member of the council since April, 1923. As there are still nine months of the life of the present council to run, a by-election will be necessar\ r . Councillor R. A. Wright is also a very busy man since his elevation to Cabinet rank, but he some time ago stated his desire to remain in office, until within six months of the date of the municipal election in order that the expense of a by-election might be avoided. That expense is now, however, unavoidable. The Marquis of Clydesdale, well known as a boxer, has arrived in Australia en route to New Zealand. He is accompanied by Mr Edward Egan, an American Rhodes .Scholar, who won the heavyweight title at the last Olympic Games. The New Zealand Boxing Association is extending an invitation to the visitors, and it is hoped to arrange matches for them in New Zealand. Mr J. B. Brinsden, who recently retired from the management of the Dunlop Rubber Company of Australia, Ltd., was the recipient of a presentation b>’ the company’s staff in Wellington on Friday. Mr T. E. James, when making the presentation, made reference to the part Mr Brinsden had pla\’ed in the history of the New Zealand motor business. Messrs Cameron and Galvin also paid tribute to the business relationships with their late chief. A gold watch was presented to Mr Brinsden and a silver bowl to Mrs Brinsden. Mr Harold W. Hesse, 8.A.. B.Sc. (agriculture) has been appointed agricultural instructor for the city- and suburban area and Lower Wairarapa, under the Education Board. Mr Hesse is forty-one years of age, and has been five years instructor under the Auckland Education Board for the Waikato and King Country districts. For several , years he. was farming on his own property at West'mere. He is the author of the text books “ Agriculture in New Zealand ” and “ Manures and Manuring in New Zealand,” and is consulting agricultural scientist for several firms. Mr Hesse won a scholarship at the Universit}’ of Cambridge, England, where he secured his 8.A., and he secured his B.Sc. (with honours) at the University of London.
