Getting Careless (?)

The suggestion that the Australian cricketers are getting careless was made by M. A. Noble in a cable from London to Sydney on June 6, describing the first Yorkshire match. On a wicket described as easy the Australians were dismissed for 177 by Yorkshire. Crawford, an old player from the second eleven, clean bowled three men. and took four for 38. Said Noble: —“In Yorkshire this morning it was no secret that Australians following the tour had formed the impression that among some of the older players there had been a blase spirit from the inception. They quoted one tourist as having said, “ Let’s hope that Root gets uprooted.’’ “ The blase spirit manifested itself at Bradford, and overnight i ejections apparently brought smug satisfaction that Root is the sort of bowler that comes off once, but is easily played in future by leaving him alone. “ Carelessness was responsible for the downfall of Bardsley, Andrews, Woodfull and Collins. Bardsley should have left a ‘riser’ from Waddington alone, and Andrews strolled in front of one from Robinson. Woodfull was out to a flagrant mis-cail by Collins, who was tamely tapping the ball. Finally he tapped one to Dolphin on the leg side. “ It is incredible that these Australian batsmen should fail. Mr Fred Toone (Yorkshire secretary) says that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the wicket, though a heavy dew overnight and sun this morning caused the ball to work a bit. “ Taylor tried to pull a ball which was pitched on his leg stump and took the off stump. Gregory and Richardson hit fearlessly, until Gregory, in trying a wild swipe to leg, lost his leg stump. Ryder made a similar stroke and lost his middle stump. “ Ellis, who gave two chances, kept up his end for an hour, and the innings lasted 235 mimites. Crawford has an easy style, bowls a medium-pace ball and keeps a perfect length
