A highly respected and popular resident of Papanui passed away this week in the person of the late Mr George Ritchie. lie was the first choirmaster of the old Presbyterian Church. In recent years he took a prominent part in local politics as a member of the executive of the Burgesses’ Association, and assisted to get the new St. James Park and also the amalgamation of Papanui with the city. ANGLICAN. Last Sunday night, Bishop WestWatson preached at St Paul’s Church, and after the service a reception was held in St Paul’s Schoolroom, over 300 parishioners being present, including visitors from the Harewood and St Silas’ Churches. The Rev. W. 11. Orbell introduced the Bishop and Mrs West-Watson and their daughters, and Mr W. A. Wilson, from the parishioners, and Mr Hockey, as the oldest vestryman, welcomed his Lordship to PapaGRAND CONCERT. On Thursday, July 1, at the Memorial Hall, a grand concert will be held to raise funds to help on the young peoples’ activities in connection with the Methodist Church. The programme is by winners of the recent competitions. and other Christchurch talent. WESLEY GUILD. At the Tuesday evening meeting of the Wesley Guild, members came provided with selections from their favourite poets. Miss I. Robinson, as convenor of the literary committee, presid ed. A very delightful evening was spent with poets, both of the earlier and later periods. Practically all the

members took part, reading or reciting their choice. Next meeting is a social evening, “Ladies’ Night.” PUKEKO BASKET BALL CLUB. Last Saturday the Pukeko Basket Ball Club played Canterbury College B team and won by 45 to 24 points. WAIMAIRI BASKET BALL TEAM. The Waimairi School basket ball team travelled to Ilornby on Monday, to play the local school team. The game was very exciting and ended in a draw, seven all. The Hornby teachers and pupils entertained the visitors to afternoon tea, and were thanked by Mr Henry, with the addition of an invitation to visit Waimairi as soon as possible. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY’S ANNUAL EUCHRE AND DANCE. One of the social events in Papanui each year is the Horticultural Society’s euchre and dance. This year it is to be held on June 29. There are six ■ good euchre prizes, two lucky spots, Bethel’s Band, and late trams. LADIES’ GUILD. The annual rpeeting of. the Methodist Ladies’ Guild was held on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. H. L. Blamires presiding. . The secretary, Mrs* W. Baynes, presented the annual report and balance sheet. A credit balance of £3O was shown. The following offi-cei-s were elected: —President, Mrs Biamires; vice-presidents, Mesdames Hewlett. Kigbt, Elliot, Carr; treasurer, Mrs Tillman; organist, Mrs W. H. Marshall; buying committee, Mesdames W. 11. Marshall and Quigley. W.C. T. U. The monthly meeting of the Papanui branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held last Thursday week in the Presbyterian Bible Class room,. Mrs Simpson presiding over a good, attendance of . members. Mrs Richards gave, the address, which wa,s i interesting and inspiring. A hearty vote of thanks to the speaker was carried Mrs Chandler contributed a solo. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the social committee, and one new member was initiated. NOTES. The W.C.T.U.’s jumble sale last Saturday realised £ll. Winners at the Euchre Assembly on Wednesday evening were: Mr George Derrett 1, Mr G. Morrison 2; Mrs Hamilton 1, Mrs Miller 2, Mrs Hookham 3. A correspondent says:—“St James’ Park’s fine oval is going begging. What about starting a men’s or girls’ hockey club, or else soccer or ’baseball. There is room for a couple of grounds.” PAPANUI BAND. The Papanui Band was launched on Thursday night at a meeting in the Town Hall. The speeches in support were made by Messrs T. Hall, L. Gee, J. 11. Reynolds, and G. Hanson. The following committee was set up:— Messrs S. Keech, C. R. Dallow, R. Dallow, H. Stokes, G. Fisher, W. Keech. Blain, Benson, R. Hansen, Jnr., T. Hall, G. Hansen, and L. Gee (secretary).
