PERVERTED HUMOUR.

TO the eyes of the charwoman who walked into the Ashburton Public Library yesterdav morning it would have seemed as if Swift's “Battle of the Books” had been waged there the night before. The books had left their accustomed resting places in the cases and were lined up in solid formation on each side of the staircase. The chairs in the room had been stacked on the reading desks and bookcases, while outside the window a green tablecloth fluttered in the breeze.

The scene of disarray was the

product of the fertile though perverted minds of practical jokers, who broke into the building during the night.
