NOTES OF PAST AND PRESENT. SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT OF THE “ STAR.-

DISTRICT PROGRESS. The Spreydon building permits issued for April and May, 1926, show an in crease over the same months in 1925 Permits numbering 28 were issued foi April and Maj r , 1926, the values being £16,850, while for the same months last ye.r twenty-one permits were issued; the values being £13,102. BECKENHAM TENNIS CLUB. The club held a successful dance lasl Wednesday in the Beckenham Hall Somerfield Street, Spreydon, there be ing present about eighty couples. The winners of the Monte Carlo Dance were Mr and Mrs Besley. Other noveltj dances were held during the evening special mention being made of the spot light waltz, which w. s very effective due to the coloured lights used. Mr C. Bullen acted as M.U. WEST SPREYDON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The West Spreydon School Commit tee held its monthly meeting last Mon day, there being present Mr R. Glovei (chair), Messrs Judkins, Campbell Good, Craig, Robinson and Clemens The headmaster reported the roll num ber to be 53 boys and 59 girls. The secretary was instructed tc write and thank the Canterbury Rugb} Union for its donation of £5 ss. It was decided to apply to the City Counci Electrical Department for two extr* lights, to be placed one at eacli en trance, and to the Canterbury Auto mobile Association for “Go Slow’ boards. It was agreed to hold a fet< shortly in aid of the school funds am to call a meeting on June 23 in con nection with same. A hearty voti of thanks was passed to Mr Richins for his donation to be given to th< winner of the aggregate euchre prizt over three nights. The committee held a successful euchre and dance it the school last Saturday evening, then being a good attendance of dancer; and players. son 2. The lucky spot waltz winners were Mrs Mills and Mr Sears. SPREYDON BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting will be held next Monday, when Mr James R. Devereaux, editor of the “Green Leaf,” will give an address, his subject being “Wrong Eating Cause of Disease.” Ladies cordially invited. SPREYDON PARK. A combined meeting of all interested will be held in the old Council Chambers next Wednesday at 8 p.m., when final arrangements will be made in connection with the proposed Queen Carnival. WESLEY GUILD. The Union Church Wesley. Guild met for their educational meeting on Saturday last, when they listened to an extremely interesting lantern lecture on “The Zimbabive Ruins—a Trip to Africa.” The lecture was given by Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., and was enjoj'ed by all present. SELWYN KINDERGARTEN. At the monthly meeting of the Selwyn Kindergarten, which was held in the schoolroom, the following were present: Mesd-mes Williamson, Paterson, St. Geo. Atkinson, Osborne, Capstick, Harding, Hutchings and Griffith. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Robinson, Taylor and Gosney. The school re-opened on June 1 1, with a very good attendance. The committee ran a sucessful jumble sale on June 5. “COME TO CHURCH” NOTES. Opening services in connection with • the “Come to Church” campaign, were 1 held at Union Methodist Church, Selwyn Street, on Sunday last. Mr J. 1 Andrew preached at 11 a.m. and Rev. A. Liversedge conducted the evening service. The attendances were encouraging, and the Minister extended a warm welcome to newcomers. He added words of encouragement to infrequent worshippers. The services were made attractive by bright sing--1 ing. During the evening service the choir rendered the anthem “Sing Ye Merrily,” and Mesdames Fletcher and Ancell sang a duet. Residents of the ' district should not fail to drop in and spend an hour in praise and song. 1 Non-church-goers are specially invited. SURPRISE PARTY. A surprise party organised by Air C. Pepper and M. Holmes visited the re- , sidence of Mr and Mrs Mackenzie, i Frankley Street, on Friday evening. ’ An enjoyable time was spent in . games and music, Mr W. LOYAL ADDINGTON LODGE. The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Addington Lodge was held in the lodge _ room Dickers Street, cn Monday, May 31, the N.G., Brother W. H. Larcombe, presiding over a very good attendance of members. The election of officers for the ensuing six months resulted as follows: —Noble Grand, Brother R. W. Flintoff; vice grand, Brother L. A. Gourlav; elective secretary. Brother A. M. W.'Mills. Brother 11. W. Gourlay, ” P.G., and Brother W. G. Wigglesworth were appointed as additional trustees, , and Brother J. A. Clark, P.D.G.M., was re-elected as auditor. Two members proposed friends for initiation to the , lodge, and the lecture master, Brother H. W. Gourlay, P.G., on behalf of the lodge, presented Brother A. Palmer, P.G , with a framed past grand’s certi-. cate. 1.0.0. F. The regular meeting of the above . lodge was held in the lodge room. Selwvn Street, on June 7, 1926. Noble Grand Brother Dougall presided over a good attendance of members. Sick pay was passed for payment. The Addington Rugby League Foot ball Club held their weekly euchre and dance last Tuesday evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Selwvn Street. There * was a large attendance present. The committee work indefatigably for the • comfort and enjoyment of their guests and these weekly functions are becoming popular. The following were the prize-winners:--Ladies, Mrs Andrews. Miss Coxou, Miss Fitzsimmons, Miss' Watson, special prize to lady playing as gentleman, Mrs Fewings; gentlemen. Mr Forward, Mr Hanson, Mr .Shaw, Mr Harding. The novelty dance winners were Miss Hamer, Mr Hamer, Miss Han son, Mr Dunn. Miss Bridges, Mr Cotton.’ Fifteen prizes will be given next Tuesday evening for euchre and novelty ' dances.
