BIG LEVIES TO HELP STRIKERS.
MINERS’ POSITION BECOMING ACUTE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cablo Association. (Received June 5, 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 5. The leaders of the striking engine drivers and firemen rejected a proposal for a compulsory conference. The strike has now been in progress for a. month. The position of the miners is becoming more acute. While -they are depending upon Government assistance the strikers are securing most of their financial support from the fellow-members of their organisation who are not employed in the coal mines, and who are being levied from ten to thirty-five shillings weekly. The number of strikers is about a thousand, but there are twelve thousand engine drivers engaged in other pursuits than mines. The Trades and Labour Council has appointed a deputation to wait on Mr Lang when he returns from his holiday, and ask him to intervene in an endeavour to effect a settlement.
