GIRL GUIDE MOVEMENT.
Lady Marjorie Dalrymple gave an address to the members of the District Committees of the Girl Guide movement in the Concert Hall of the Y.M.C.A. yesterday afternoon. Representatives of the general executive and of the following committees and many Guides in uniform were present:—Sydenham, Cashmere Hills, Addington. Merivale, Sumner, New Brighton, St Luke’s, Rangers, St Saviour’s, St Anne’s, Fendalton, and the newlyformed Papanui Committee. Afternoon tea was provided by St Luke’s Rangers. Miss Bromley Cocks introduced Lady Marjorie Dalrymple, who said she regarded herself as a messenger between the companies at Home and those in other parts of the world. She related her experiences in Borneo, where two ! companies were formed of two conflicting elements, the Chinese aristocrats, followers of Confucius, and the Chinese girls of the Christian mission, and yet, mostly throught the medium of games, class distinction was removed and they worked harmoniously together. Ultimately uniforms were demanded so that all differences between rich and | poor were removed. Lady Marjorie J said that she first took up Guide work on the suggestion of Lady Baden- ( Powell. She owed much to the movement, and her journey to New Zealand was a happy result of it. Committees were very useful to confute adverse criticism; and her explanations would go far to dispel any doubts and to encourage all to join. Guiders were very much needed, girls who could take charge of a company of forty, for it was unfair to ask school teachers, who as a body had given splendid help; cheerful, joyful girls, willing to give one hour and a half a week, fond of fun, and good at games were needed for the movement towards good citizenship and' Empire work, which had already earned the name of the Junior League of Nations. A vote of thanks to the speaker was carried by acclamation.
