POLICE RAID HOUSE IN MADRAS STREET.

NINE MEN ARRESTED, AND CHARGED UNDER GAMING ACT.

Two telephones were ringing, and there were other activities, it is stated, at 171, Madras Street, when a raid was made on the premises by Detective-Sergeant J. B. Young, Detective E. Eade, and Detective J. Bickerdike. They arrested nine men, and charged two with keeping a common gaming-house, and the others with having been found on the premises. They took possession of a large quantity of material which, it is alleged, is used in betting transactions.

The two men charged with keeping a common gaming house are:— Marius Sheridan, 171 Madras Street. Charles Frederick Fearon, 171 Madras Street. The seven charged with having been found on the premises are:— Harold Nelson Elvy, 78 Byron Street. George Lashmore, 61 Essex Street. Frank Reid, 239 Tuam Street. George Turner, 232 St Asaph Street. Harry Arthur Sutcliffe, 216 Springfield Road. Percy Chick, 21 Albert Street. George Henry Adcock, 27 Mace’s Road. A crowd had collected outside the

building and watched the police bring the arrested men out. All the men arrested were brought before Mr J. H. Stringer, J.P., and Mr P. L. Davies, J.P. Detective-Sergeant Young asked for a remand till Monday. He said that bail would not be opposed. Sheridan said that it would be difficult to get money after 12 o’clock They could give him a cheque. Mr Davies: Can you get surety?— Yes. The remand was granted. Bail was allowed Sheridan and Fearon in their own recognisance of £2OO each and a surety of £2OO each, the others in their own recognisance of £lO each.
