RICCARTON RECORDS

BOROUGH NOTES AND NEWS

By Our Special Correspondent.

COUNCIL JOTTINGS. Riccarton Borough has the third largest increase of any borough in the Dominion—l32s—since the last census. There is ground for hoping that the Town Hall will be enlarged and no doubt it is urgently required. There is also the possibility of a band rotunda being erected in the borough, as there is a likelihood of a block of land being procured for a reserve, and so the residents may look forward to municipal band concerts. The council circular regarding the estimate of £l9 for sewer connection was discussed at the council meeting, it being reported that it led to a lot of misapprehension among the ratepayers, who wanted to know the cost of the whole outlay, which was very hard to estimate. The estimate of' £l9 was only for the connection with the sewer. WHARENUI SCHOOL CONCERT. A variety entertainment will be held in the Town Hall on Monday evening for the purpose of providing funds for the final payment on the heating system ; any surplus to be given to the infant school for special apparatus for the little ones. A splendid programme has been arranged and all patrons will have a good entertainment. Among the performers are Misses XV. Smith, Joan Hughes, G. M’Caw, G. Nixon, M. Kershaw, and D. Henry. New items will be given by the infants and by Mrs Larsen's pupils, and Mr Coates. The committee will be represented on the programme by the chairman and secretary. Messrs Buckett and Cossins. Mr If. S. S. Kyle. M.P., Mayor of Riccarton, will preside. LABOUR EUCHRE SOCIALS. The fourth series of fortnightly euchre socials was held in the Town Hall last week. There was a very large attendance. The efficiency of the management contributes largely to the ever-increasing popularity of these functions. The euchre was well contested and the scores low. Xliss Burford secured the ladies’ first prize, with Mrs Knight second, and Miss Sullivan third. The lucky number was secured by Mrs Marshall. Mr Burford. for the third time this season, secured the men’s first prize, Mr Smith being second and Mr Hansen, jun., third. The men’s lucky number was won by Mr Sandman. The lucky spot prizes were awarded to Miss Meharry and Mr M’Allister. After supper dancing was continued till midnight, Mr Bruce Estall officiating as pianist. Mr Hansen and Mr Stevens supervised the function. The next euchre party and dance will be held on June 10. Further particulars appear in this issue of the “ Star.” BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION. XVith the ever-increasing population in Riccarton, it is a surprise that there is not a burgesses’ association. It is about the only district in and around Christchurch that is without one. It is true there is a Citizens’ Association, but that does not represent all classes. The Burgesses’ Associations are a great help to the several local bodies, whom they assist in many ways. The members of the associations become well versed in municipal affairs and are thus able to initiate improvements. These associations also keep the councils, Drainage Board and Tramway Board up to the mark. HOCKEY. After a very hard and strenuous game the Wharenui Hockey Club were beaten by Trinity Hockey Club by two goals to nil. The following played best for the local boys:—J. Mounsey, F. Fullwood and G. Egan. PERSONAL. The death occurred recently of Miss Nesta Mounsey, eldest daughter of the late Mr R. Mounsey, for many years assistant master of the XX r harenui School. She was an old pupil of that school and was a member of the old Wharenui Ladies’ Hockey Club. The

sympathy of all goes out to Mrs Mounsey and family. METHODIST CHURCH. On Wednesday evening the Sunday School teachers and members of the Upper Riccarton Methodist Church gave a surprise party to the superintendent of the Sunday School. Air P. G. Clements, at his residence in Blenheim Road. A delightful evening was spent, and during supper an opportunity was taken by the Rev B. J. James to present Mr Clements with a beautiful Methodist hymn book as a token of love and esteem from the Sunday School teachers, and members of the church. Among those present were the Rev B. J. and Mrs James, Mr and Mrs M’AUister, Air and Mrs W. Clements, Alesdames Pettigrew, Rowman. Dodge and Al’Donald.
