REMIT WAS “ALL BUNK,” AND FRUITGROWERS REFUSE TO DISCUSS IT

(Special to the “Star.”) DUNEDIN, June 4. Short shrift was given to a remit that the Government be urged to pass legislation that all Asiatics be debarred from coming into New Zealand for ten years, and that all Canterbury members of Parliament be asked for their support, at the conference to-day of Otago fruitgrowers. The chairman said that the matter was outside the jurisdiction of the association. Mr G. Moodie said the remit was “all bunk,” and the conference refused to discuss it. Speaking at to-day’s conference of Otago fruitgrowers on a remit from the Rangiora association that the protection cn opossums should be lifted for at least a distance of three miles from any orchard area. Mr W. T. Goodwin (Assistant-Director of Agriculture) declared that the opossum did not create a danger to orchards. The movers of the proposal to lift the protection were probably registered orchardists who did not pack a case of fruit, and wanted an opportunity to carry out trapping. The question was under the control of the Department of Internal Affairs. The conference decided to await the opinions of the Rangiora delegates to the Dominion gathering.
