POLICE REPORT ON LYTTELTON HOTELS.

MOST HAVE BEEN WELL CONDUCTED

The arinual meeting of the Lyttelton Licensing Committee was held in the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court this morning. Mr 11. Y. Widdowson, S.M., presided, and there were present the following other members of the committee Messrs Orton Bradley, J. Richards, D. M Rac, F. G. Nortoii and F. Knights. The chairman stated that the police report stated that most of the hotels had been conducted in good order with the exception of one or two with which they would deal as their licenses were applied for. The following transfers were granted : Royal Hotel (Lyttelton), from G. Wright to David Edmonds. The transfer of the Ileathcote Arms (Heathcote) from W. 11. Newey to Leonard Greenaway, along with the application for a publican’s license, was adjourned till June 28.

Publicans’ licenses ■were granted to the following:—David Edmonds (Royal Hotel, Lyttelton), William Forsyth Gibson (Madeira Hotel, Akaroa) and Patrick John Finn (Lyttelton Hotel, Lyttelton). Applications for renewals of publicans’ licenses were granted in the following cases:—John M’Kav (Bruce Hotel, Akaroa), Robert Christopher Dobson (Cave Hotel, Sumner), Henry William Thompson (Marine Hotel, Sumner), Charles Godfrey Hayward Teichert (Empire Hotel, Lyttelton),. George Sidney James - (Saxon Hotel, Lyttelton), Henry George Scott (Canterbury Hotel, Lyttelton), George Livingstone Columbus (Ocean View Hotel, Governor’s Bay), Ilenry James Polton (Wharf Hotel, Woolston), John de Putron Manson (Albion Hotel, Lyttelton), William Mount Buddie (Metropole Hotel, Akaroa), Edward James Costello (British Hotel, Lyttelton), Francis William Young (Somerset Hotel, Duvauchelles Bav), Joseph Round (.Ileathcote Valley) and Henry George Tollan (Grand Hotel, Akaroa). Accommodation licenses were renewed to Ilenry Lack, Wheat Sheaf Hotel, Teddington, and James Edmond Bisman, Hilltop Hotel. Wholesale license was granted to Forbes, Ltd., Lyttelton. In the case of the Cave Rock Hotel, Sumner, the chairman pointed out that he had personally received complaints of after-hour trading. The proprietor had been warned that the hotel would have to be conducted more satisfactorily in future. After-hour trading was also carried on at* the Heathcote Valley Hotel. The information in regard to tiiis house had come from a reliable source. The proprietor was warned. In the case of the Mitre Hotel, which was partly burned down at the end of March, the granting of a license wAs adjourned until June 28 in order that plans of the new’ building might be submitted to the committee. Mr Hanna, xvho represented the owner of the property, stated that some delay had been caused through the council condemning the building and taking some time to decide that the new one should be of brick. The proprietress v’as dangerously ill at the present time, and had not been able to transact the sale of the property.
