TRAIN CRASHES INTO MOTOR.
EIGHT PEOPLE ARE HURT AT PREBBLETON. ONE WOMAN RECEIVED CONCUSSION OF BRAIN.
The Christchurch-Southbridge train crashed into a motor-car containing eight people on Saturday evening, at the Prebbleton railway crossing. All the occupants except a baby of four months were injured. The car was driven by Stanley Walker, of Christchurch.
Concussion of the brain was sustained by Mrs Lucy Gamble, 61. Grafton Street. She was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital. The driver had his left leg injured and his body severely bruised. Mr Walker did not hear the warning whistle and, thinking that the line was cleftr, he prepared to cross it. However, when a few feet from the line he saw the train and immediately applied both brakes. The car sw6rv£d but the driver could not clear the train, and dashed into the rear of the engine, the car being smashed to pieces.
THE INJURED. The following were the passengers and their injuries;—
STANLEY WALKER, right leg crushed and general bruising. MRS GAMBLE, concussion of the brain and shock. DOROTHY GAMBLE, aged fifteen, cuts on right leg and sprained ankle. MRS BALFOUR, face and body bruised. MRS JEFFREY, severely bruised and shaken. ARTHUR GAMBLE, aged fourteen, knee cut and slight bruises. OLAF BALFOUR, aged two, slightly bruised. ERIC BALFOUR, aged four months, escaped unhurt.
The injured were conveyed to Lincoln in the gxiard’s van of the train, and were attended there by Dr Cooke. After being treated all but Mr 9 Gamble were able to return to their homes. Mrs Gamble’s condition is improving, according to a report from the hospital to-day.
