At the end of the third round at Saint Andrews the only players with a winning prospect were Mitchell and Boomer, 224, Robson 225, and Duncan 227. Early in the fourth round there was a violent thunderstorm and torrential rain. Within five minutes great pools collected on the links. Play was postponed for an hour while the water was swept off'the greens. Mitchell, at the far end of the links, did not hear of the -postponement and plodded on through the deluge. His seventy-six was one of the finest rounds of golf ever played. As an instance of the conditions, Renouf needed five putts on the flooded seventeenth green. Compston was forced to putt with a raashie on four greens. Popplewell has not reached his true form. His morning eighty-four was chiefly due to three putts on nine green. In the course of his afternoon’s eighty-eight he fas thrice out of bounds, and his putting was still faulty.
