Dr and Mrs J. P. Whetter are visiting Hanmer Springs.
Mr and Mrs M’Burney. left Lyttelton last evening en route to Wanganui and Hawke's Bay. Mrs J. Sommers, Lichfield* Street, is visiting her sister, Mrs E. Stockwell, Timaru.
Mr and Mrs T. Northcote have Returned to their home in Waiau, after spending a few days in Christchurch. Mrs Crawshaw and Miss Johnston, Chrischurch. who were at Mount Cook, left yesterday for Pembroke and Queenstown. Mrs H. E. Button, Papanui Road, who has been the guest of Mrs R. Hudson, Dunedin, will return to Christchurch during the week.
Mrs Coates, wife of the Prime Minister, arrived in Christchurch from the south last evening and proceeded to Wellington.
Mr and Mrs A. M. Turnbull, and Miss Turnbull, of Sydney, are visiting Christchurch, and are registered at the Clarendon Hotel.
Mr and Mrs Maurice O'Rorkc, Lake Coleridge, are spending a few days in Christchurch, and are staying at the United Service Hotel.
Mr and Mrs M’Cosh Clark, of Auckland, who have been making a brief stay in Christchurch, returned to the north last evening. Mrs F. Dennehv, of Grevmouth, who has been staying in Christchurch for the past three months, will return to the West Coast to-day. Recent arrivals at the United Service Hotel include:—Mr and Mrs G. St V'. Keddell (Invercargill), Mr and Mrs S. Odlin (Wellington), and Miss Reid (Brisbane).
Mr and Mrs Redwood and Miss Redwood (Blenheim), Miss Helen and Miss Hibberd (Wellington), are among the recent arrivals staying at Warner’s Hotel. Miss Mary Lambie, Weston Road, who has been studying the science of public health at_ the University of Toronto, will arrive in Wellington early next week by the Makura, and will spend a few days with relatives, before returning to Christchurch. The Sisters of Mercy of the Akaroa Convent have been notified that one of their pupils. Miss Hazel Richfield, has been awarded by the Trinity College of Music, London, an exhibition valued at £6 6s, for having gained at the December theoretical examination the maximum number of marks (100). Among the recent arrivals at the Hotel Federal are the following:—Mr A. M’Bride, Dunedin; Misses Welch (2), Masterton; Miss E. Jacobson, Akaroa; Mr W. Scott, Timaru; Mrs Mackenzie, Scotland; Mr and Mrs J. G. Martin, Geraldine; Mr A. E. Reeves, Timaru; Mr and Mrs H. A. Jones, and Mr A. Snushall, Dunedin.
On Saturday evening the patients of the Upper Sanatorium were, entertained by a party from the Christchurch Amateur Operatic Society, under Mr G. L. Donaldson. A very enjoyable entertainment was given. Miss E. Donaldson and Mr Harrison Cook were ably supported =by Miss Docherty, Messrs Lester and Hale, Miss M. Wilson, Mrs Donaldson and Miss Docherty.
A concert party organised by Mrs J. C. Holmes visited the receiving home on Saturday afternoon. Items were contributed by Mrs Floyd and her orchestra, vocal solos by Miss N. Penberthly, Ella Skurr, Snook and Barnby, Messrs G. Cordner and J. W. Gallop, and recitations by Miss M. Edwards. Cars to convey the party to and from the city were lent by Messrs H. Herriot, Peverill, Price and Dominion Motors.
Mr H. J. Marriner, president of the Industrial Association of Canterbury, addressed a large audience at the Y.M.C.A.. on Friday evening on the subject of “Local Industries.” After tracing the history of the association from its inception in 1879 and the development and increase of exports, he proceeded to deal with the subject of “Primary and Secondary Industries,” emphasising the necessity in the interests of the Dominion for housew’ives to purchase locally made goods. Lantern slides were shown of several New Zealand factories and their works. Not for many seasons has such interest been manifested in a dance as in that to be held at the Winter Garden to-night, for direct from an exceptionally successful season at the Exhibition, Manuel Hyman and band will supply the music in their own inimitable way. There is a sparkle and vim about their plaving which one usually associates with Continental bands, and their enthusiasm is infectious to the dancers. In addition a prettily arranged ballet will be given by the pupils of Miss M’Donald. Only a few tickets are left and these should be obtained without delav at The Bristol.
Mrs Randall Burdon is visiting her mother, Mrs Bowden, Papanui Road. Miss Y. Welsh, of Riccarton, is visiting Auckland. Miss Betty Cotterill, Cashmere, has returned to Christchurch from Dunedin.
Mr and Mrs Charles Plimmer and Miss Plimmer (Wellington) arrived in Christchurch this morning, and are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mrs E. Peppitt, of Gloucester Street, and Mrs J. Woods, of Riccarton, who have been the guests of Mrs M. Woods, have left for Auckland.
Mr and Mrs R. A. Collins, who were with Mrs Herbert Holdgate, Bidwill Street, Timaru, have gone back to Ashburton.
Mrs Coles, Christchurch, arrived in Timaru from Dunedin yesterday, and is with Mrs John Moody. Mr and Mrs Brodie, Christchurch, who were at the Grosvenor Hotel. Timaru, motored to Dunedin on Saturday*.
Mjs George Hart, Wai-iti Road. Timaru, returned from Dunedin yesterday, accompanied by Mrs Marshall, Christchurch, who is now her guest. Mr and Mrs A. Gordon have returned from Dunedin, and were the guests of Mrs Pawsey, “Roxlea,” Hawarden, before returning to their home in Christchurch.
Miss Bromley-Cocks, Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs W. H. Helmore, Koromiko, Wai-iti Road, Timaru. Miss Bowen, Christchurch, who was also there, is now with Mrs J. A. Julius, St Mary’s Vicarage.
A delightful children's party was given by Mr and Mrs F. 11. Zander at their residence, Atholstan Street, Spreydon, on Saturday last, the occasion being in honour of their little daughter Ziska’s ninth birthday. The children spent a merry time in games, competitions and musical items, a dainty tea being served. The children present were :—Misses Ziska Zander, Lorna Hawken, Rexie Goodwin, June Hyde, Iris Paterson, Betty Ingram, Joyce Chalmbers, Doris Shapcott, Jean and Rona Irving, and Master Douglas Zander.
