(Received May 3, 10.35 a.m.) FAIRBANKS, May 2. Later details of Malcolm Smith’s overland journey to Point Barrow show that the
part3 r suffered severe hardships owing to the intense cold and to the shortness of food. Of the sixt3 reight dogs with which they started only fifteen were alive on reaching Point Barrow. Many died of hun ger and others were so weak that they were shot to end theiir misery.
In view of the difficulties so far encountered Captain Wilkins is considering reorganisation arrangements for the conveying of stores to the base and carrying out of- the general plans of the expedition.
Malcolm Smith, veteran sledge team driver and Arctic explorer, was engaged in taking supplies from Fairbanks through to Captain Wilkins’s base at Point Barrow.
