DAIRY CONTROL AND VIEWS OF MR COATES.
DEPUTATION ASKS FOR LEGISLATION.
l’or Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 29. Representatives of the dairy industry who remained throughout the proceedings at yesterday’s conference (held in Wellington to discuss the method of electing members to the Dairy Control Board) waited on the Prime Minister (Mr Coates) and the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Ilawken) to-day-They put before them resolutions passed by the conference. The Prime Minister stated that legislation would be drafted giving expression to the desire to those who remained at the conference. This legislation ivould first of all be submitted to Cabinet for consideration, as he was unable to say exactly whether Cabinet agreed on the method of election on the tonnage basis. He suggested a conference. The representations of the deputation would be considered so, also would those of the opposing section at yesterday’s conference who were to wait upon him later in the day.
Mr Coates - said: —“lf the farming community and butter producers desire to handle their concerns within the meaming of the Act passed b>’ Parliament and are sufficiently unanimous to bring that into effect, it seems to me that is their business. All we can do is to ask you to use your ordinary commercial judgment and commercial practice, which we hope will be perfectly fair to everyone concerned; and in addition to that to endeavour to see that the community itself is not disturbed by any action that may be taken in the light of the decision you have made.”
