SHIPPING HOLD-UP MAY BE SERIOUS.
AULSEBROOK’S HANDS MAY BE PAID OFF SOON. If the shipping hold-up at Lyttelton continues for any length of time there is every chance that a big number of workers in the City will be thrown out of work, temporarily, at least.. Aulsebrook and Co., Ltd. have notified their employees that it might be necessary to give the hands notice on Saturday. Should the notice, as suggested, be given it will be for an indefinite period, but will affect at least 500 workers. The company will continue to run as many departments as possible, but is faced with the difficulties of securing sugar and coal, and with getting manufactured goods away to the North Island. to which more than a third of the firm's output is sent. The North Island is at present cut out by reason of the cessation of activity at Lyttelton. The company cannot employ boxmakers and case-makers under the cirAimstances and these represent a large proportion. Other confectionery and biscuit-mak-ing firms are also apprehensive and look forward to an early settlement of the dispute Unless that comes they will have to sign off employees.
