“GEORDIE, NOT ESQUIRE.”
A collision between a motor-car and express which took place at Killingworth recently, recalls the first days of the locomotive. “The first locomotive that I made,” said George Stephenson, “was at Killingworth Colliery.” He was emploj ed at Killingworth when he got into touch with Pease and persuaded him that railways could be run with locomotives. Stephenson begged Pease to come to Killingworth and see his locomotives, with a view to the future Stockton and Darlington railway. The story goes that Pease wrote to Stephenson to announce his coming, addressing the letter to “George Stephenson, Esquire, Engineer.” No one could identify this personage till someone suggested that it might be meant for “Geordie, the engine-wright.”
