KING SENDS ANZAC MESSAGE.
“ WE ARE WITH YOU IN HONOURING DEAD.” Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 23. The Governor-General has been commanded by the King to communicate to the people of New Zealand on the occasion of Anzac Day the following message from his Majesty:— On this day of remembrance and thanksgiving the thoughts of the Queen and myself are with our people of New Zealand in their commemoration of the Glorious Dead. SERVICES IN THE CITT. The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) will have a very busy time on Sunday. In addition to preaching at the morning and evening services in his own church he will deliver the Anzac address at the Cashmere Sanatorium special service on Sunday morning, and will preside at the citizens’ memorial service in King Edward Barracks on Sunday afternoon. It is notified that parents and friends of deceased soldiers may, if they wish, place floral remembrances on the Bridge of Remembrance on Sunday. Two stands will be placed there for that purpose. CHURCH SERVICES. A short service will be held on Sunday (Anzac Day) at the Stadium, New Brighton, at 10.30 a.m. The Mayor will preside. A short address will be delivered by the Rev J. S. Young. The hymn, “ Lead, Kindly Light,” will be sung, and a wreath will be laid on the steps of the memorial. The service will conclude in time for the public to attend the church services at 11 a.m., when special references to Anzac Day will be made. The New Brighton Boy Scouts and Cadets will parade, and the public are requested to be present. The evening service at St John’s Church, Latimer Square, on Anzac Day, will be a special service of remembrance for those who died in the Great War. The preacher will be the Right Rev the Bishop of Christchurch.
Special Anzac Day services will be held to-morrow in the Holy Trinity Church, Avonside. The preacher at 11 a.m. and at 7 p.m. will be the Rev Honi Parata, who was chaplain to all the Maori contingents, and who was also shosen to preach the Armistice sermon in France. Service will be held in All Saints’ Church, Sumner, at the usual hour of Sunday morning service, 11 a.m. Returned soldiers and relatives of the fallen are invited to be present, and some local troops have accepted an invitation to attend. Floral tributes are invited. A citizen’s memorial service will be held in the Town Hall, Sumner, at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The clubs and associations will meet at the sea front, and headed by the Sumner Marine Band, march to the Town Hall, laying wreaths at the memorial tablet en route. At Durham Street Methodist Church to-morrow evening a special Anzac service will be held. A special invitation is issued to those who served in the Great War. The choir will sing “What , are These?” and “O Saviour of the, World.” Mr W. J. Spratt will sing “Our God is Marching On.” The Rev W. Arthur Ilay will speak on “The Old Patriotism and the New.” r~
