GOVT. CHARGED WITH ROBBING 15,000,000 FOLK
ECONOMY PLANS CRITICISED IN COMMONS. By Telegraph—frees Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and >T.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, April 22. The House of Commons read a third time the Economv Bill by -328 votes to 138. Air J. 11. Thomas, summing up the opposition, accused the Government, under the guise of economy, of robbing 15.000,000 insured persons of the money intended to provide additional benefits. Mr Churchill, in closing the debate, pointed out that the Government was providing £120,000,000 lor social services, which was £9,000,000 more than the Labour Government deemed sufficient. The proposed economies were a iew lucky' survivors of an immense number of proposals, of which the majority rejected after examination. The debate showed the utter unreality of all the talk about economy by the Liberals and Labourites. Such was the astonishing prosperity of the National Health Insurance Fund that an additional halfpenny on the contribution, even after the economies had be£n made, would enable more than double the benefits to be given.
