Shirley-St. Albans Notes.

ST ALBANS RECREATION CLUB. The thirty-fourth annual meeting of the club was held in the club rooms, Wintoh Street, last Monday. There was a large attendance of members present. Mr J. Francis, president, occupied the chair. The committee's annual report stated that the club had had a very successful year. The membership had further increased. A sinking fund had been established to wipe off the mortgage on the building. The committee wishes to thank Messrs L. Gapes and C. Winter for services rendered to the club, and recommend that they may be appointed life members. Thanks are due to Mr H. Rogers for repairing cricket material free of charge. A gymnasium class was established during the winter months, a class having been formed for members wishing to avail themselves of the apparatus in the club premises. Friendly games of cards and billiards had been held with various clubs and associations. The balance-sheet presented showed receipts from all sources including the amounts brought forward from last year to be £638 17s sd, the expenditure had been £632 14s Bd, leaving a credit balance in the bank of £6 2s 9d. The balance of assets over liabilities amount to £B6O 16s Id. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, stated that the year from

a financial point of view was the most successful the club had had. At the commencement of the year the club had a mortgage of £750. This indebtedness had been caused by the erection of additional club premises. A sub-committee had been appointed at the last annual meeting to raise funds as a means of wiping out the debt and mainly through their efforts the committee was able to pay £250 off the mortgage. The members appreciate the work of this committee in organising euchre parties, concerts, etc., thus bringing the club into a very good financial position. From a social point of view the club had not been so sticcessful as formerly, as friendly games of cards and billiards with other clubs had not been as well attended as formerly. It is hoped that the incoming committee would arrange social evenings for lady friends and wives of members during the year. The Cricket Club had a successful season, being runners-up in both the A and B sections of the junior City and Suburban competitions. The committee has further improvements in hand, such as furnishing, renovating the main hall and ante rooms, etc., and bringing the club right up to date. Mr C. Hall seconded the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, and recalled many incidents of early days of the dub. The report and balance-sheet

were adopted. Officers were elected as follows: President, Air J. Francis; vicepresidents, Messrs C. Hall, J. Du Feu, 1 W. T. Bunt, J. W. Beanland, C. W. Colville, J. W. Colville, R. Carpenter, C, Spicer, A. H. Hobbs, E. H. Andrews, W. J. Franklin, A. Williams, W. J. Ashby and C. R. Watkinson; secretary, Mr C. J. M. Winter: treasurer, Air E. H. C. Ridder. The election of the committee was not proceeded with, owing to the reluctance of members to take office. The chairman therefore dajourned the meeting for a week. OLD SCHOLARS’ RE UNION. He is a fortunate man indeed who can impose strict discipline on the young and yet in twenty years still retain the respect and esteem of those boys. Such evidently, must be the ease when a large number of Old scholars of St Albans School, some of whom had not seen each other during the twenty years, met on Thursday evening last to pay a house-warming and surprise visit to their old dominie, Air C. Hallj who has retired from the profession and has again settled himself among his old boys and. girls (as he calls them) at 150, Ijlorth Parade, Shirley. The . surprise and pleasure of the old master . was very marked, photos were exchanged, old incidents recalled, and many reminiscences of the football. field and the swimming pool were exchanged. Alusical items were given by various members of the party. Stories were told and midnight was very close when the old master rose to thank the spirit which prompted such a visit. Air L. Campbell suitably replied, expressing the thanks of those present for the leadership which had been given to them twenty years ago and which has stood them in good stead since. Among the old scholars who were present were: Alessrs J. Pearcy, W. H. West, P. Soanes, L. Archer, W. Parks, L. Campbell, F. Faulkner, J. Falkinder, S. Knight, C. J. Green, F. H. Green, T. Pearson, 11. Ford and 11. Ilemmings. ST ALBANS EUCHRE ASSEMBLY. There was a large attendance at this week’s Euchre Assembly, Airs Walker gaining the special prize for the best card. The following were the other prize-winners: Mrs Downing, Mrs J. ■McDonald’ Airs Winter, Mrs Aloore, Airs Ray, Airs Sullivan, Alessrs - C. • Rolls, Dollan, W. 11. Triggs, C. Wilson, Boon

The letter, which appeared in these columns last week, evidently had the desired effect . of stimulating interest in the selection of the committee, as it is a long time since fifteen householders have ' been nominated for the nine seats on the committee. The election on Mopday night should be interesting for St Albans householders. ’ SHIRLEY SCHOOL. The following are the nominations for the committee: Mrs M’Kay, Messrs C. Anderson, CJ H. Bursoh, S. H. Clothier, G. Finney, C. Hunt, T. Stanley, T. Salt and C. S. Thompson. As several matters of importance are to be dealt with at the annual .meeting of householders, a large attendance is desired on Monday evening at 7.30. PERSONAL. Mr P. Winter, who has been treasurer :of the Young Men's Club- for a number of years, leaves next week to take charge of a business in Invercargill. Mr C; Ives is retiring from the position of treasurer of the Shirley School, owing to his residing outside the school area. RICHMOND RECHABITES. It w r as decided that a mid-winter - social be held and that an honours board be procured. A cordial, welcome was extended to visitors from the Ark of Refuge Tent, and responses were made by Past Chief Rulers Sister Beattie, J3rothers C. N. Watson, H- N. Dollan and P.P.C.R. Brother A. D. Hassall. A pleasant hour was spent in a game of parlour bowls, - after which the visitors were entertained at supper.
