SIX TEAMS TO PLAY IN SENIOR RUGBY CONTESTS.
SATURDAY’S “ PIPE-OPENERS ” WERE KEEN, FAST AND FULL OF INTEREST.
This year, six teams have entered for the senior competition of the Canterbury Rugby Football Union, Linwood. Merivalc, Old Boys. Varsity. Albion and Christchurch. Fast season there ■were seven teams in the competition, but North Canterbury have now dropped out. North Canterbury came at the bottom of the competition last season, although they showed better form than they' did in the previous season. North Canterbury have, however, lost four or five of their best players and so they have decided fwisely, no doubt) to enter their first team in the Senior B competition.
(AH scored points on Saturday.
The' senior competition promises t be more interesting and keenly cor
tested than it was last season, and it is fully expected that there will be some 'hard struggles on the Oval at Lancaster Park. Each of the six
senior clubs will put strong teams into the field. Old Boys, who won the competition, last season, have practically the same team available this year, and the same remarks apply to Christchurch and Merivale. who came second equal last year. In addition to this, the weaker teams. Linwood. Albion and Varsity, give every promise of showing improved form this season, that is if the friendly matches that have been played so far can be taken as a guide to the capabilities of the teams. Playing against Zingari, c.f Timaru. on Easter Saturday. Linwood gave an impressive display though the opposition was not very strong. They, however. impressed one as being a better team than last season's. Albi6n had a try-out against Christchurch on Saturday and the game resulted in a draw. 20 points all. Christchurch put quite a strong team into the field, but Albion displayed surprisingly good form, and with a bit more luck they might have left the field the winners. It seems as if the improved form shown by Albion .last year will be easily maintained, and very likely improved upon a good deal Varsity have also a better team this year, and on Saturday the Old Boys beat them by only six points to five. It was. of course, a Yfriendlv game and Old Boys did not extend themselves fully, but still, from the way Varsity played, it seems that thev will prove to be a team that will have to be reckoned with this year. The competitions start next Saturday, and the draw for the senior competition is as follows’:— L’nwood v. Merivale. Old Boys v. Varsity. Albicn v. Christchurch. It has not yet been decided which of these matches is to be played on the Oval. Any one of the three would prove a good draw. Ip view of the fact that Old Boys won the competition last year, the Old Bovs-Yarsitv game may be given pride cf place. ALBION v. CHRISTCHURCH. The game between Christchurch and Albion on Saturday did not draw a very large crowd to Lancaster Park, the general opinion, no doubt, being that, as it was a friendly game, the players would not tak? it very seriously. and that therefore there would not l;.e much interest in it. The reverse. however, proved to be the case. For a first of the season game it was remarkably keenly contested. Further. it was full of interest from the start until the final whistle. Albion showed splendid form, which no doubt came as a surprise to the majority of the spectators, most of whom “ barracked ' vigorously for the black?. Christchurch were the first to draw blood. RobiH ard scoring for them after a fijic run from twenty-five. In the eaTly .stages of the game Albion tried' sex-era! passing rushes, but thev did not get far. o-wirg to faulty handling and passing. Then came one passing bout, in which the ball travelled right along the line to T. Lilburne xm the wing. He just failed to get-across, but his brother. 11. Lilburne. wa- ha-ndv and. p'cking up. dashed over - Before half-time eleven more points'were scored for Albion, the Lilburne brothers I>einj* responsible for the lot H. Lilburne kicked a couple of penalty goals and converted a Irv. whilst T. Lilburne scored a trv. At half-time Albion were leading bv fourteen' points to 5. The second spell was very evenly contested, and there was much excitement in the final stages, when the score was 20 all. Albion were attacking at the end. but they could not nerce ihe Christchurch defence, and the game ended in a draw. The Albion back team -this vear appears to be a good deal better than their rearguard cf last season. Their outstanding beck on Saturday was 11. Lilbimnc. who was one of the most
premising young players in the senior competition laet season. All through the game on Saturday he was prominent.for good work both on attack and defence. Me is a strong runner and a difficult man to collar. Resides, he is a place kick of more than average ability. The Albion three-quarter line consisted of Beaumont. Mortlock and T. Lilburne and judging by the form thev showed on Saturday they should develop into quite a good combination as the season progresses. Beaumont and Lilburne both displayed plenty of dash on the wings. Smith, a' new player for Albion, who filled the five-eighths position. promises to be quite a useful man. Brisn M’Cleary has joined up with Albion and he was placing for them on Saturday. He Jocks fit and well and he should help *■•_> strengthen up their pack a lot _ Jn fact, with, such stalwarts as J Kennedy, Wylie, one of the most honest T«-c r king forwards in r hrist«-'hur<-b, and M'Cleary, the Albion pack is likely to- be a solid one this year.
Robilliard appears to be in good form this vear, and, if he gets the opportunities, he should be a useful scoring man for Christchurch. On Saturday he scored three tries, the first after a fine run in which he beat several opponents. M'Gregor did not appear much in the picture on Saturday but he lpoks to be in good form and he is sure to prove
[ very handy as five-eighths. C. A. Cocks played next to M’Gregor on Saturdav but he impressed one as being too lightly bu‘lt for senior football. lie does not look as if he could stand a great deal cf knocking about. Cowlishsw. Robilliard and Brown played in the thrcc-qurrter line for Christchurch on Saturday. They arc three powerfully built men and each of them has a good turn of speed. Robilliard played centre on Saturday though he would probably be better on the wing as he is a better scoring man than Brown. Cowlishaw should also be a good scoring wing. If he went for the line determinedly he would, with his weight : nd speed, be a hard man to stop. MrJlan at half back went quite well on Saturday. The Christchurch forwards appear to be a bit on the light side. They could do with one or two more forwards of the size of Leahy, who has apparently decided not to give the game up this season. At least he was playing on Saturday. Scrimshaw at win" forward was prominent for good work on Saturday but he is rather inclined to get off side. OLD BOYS V. VARSITY. As was to be expected at the beginning. of the season, good combination was lacking in the Old Boys-Varsitv match. The most promising concerted work was put in among the Varsity backs, but a hitch generally occurred before the rush had reached the line. The Old Boys’ forwards worked fairly well together, and their rushes took a deal of stopping, for the pack is still firm in its belief that the ball was not meant for one man only. They threw it about readily, and. like the schoolboy among the glasshouses, looked before they threw. Brodie, the Varsity half, was outstanding c'mong the back divisions. He fed his three-quarter line well before the opposing forwards were on him. j Ilis vis-a-vis Dailey had little chance to show out. as almost invariably the bell went from the scrum to Brodie. Wilkes. Shaw, Mahan, and Alexander improved upon Brodie’s liberality and provided the sparkle of the game. Among the Varsity peek was E. D. R. Smith, cf Raneiora, who will play for the city team this season. He showed on Saturday that he was capable of hard and determined work. He and the ball were seldom far apart. G. Thompson and J. B. Jackson were great battlers along with Snv’t.h. Though the Old Boys' backs seldom got under way with a concerted movement. Dailey and G. Mortlock gave them opportunities to do s.o. The solo efforts of these two men opened up the game among the backs, and adder] a little brilliance to an otherwise uninspiring rearguard. Harris, too, was on his game at full b. ck, and cleared time and again. DRAWS MADE FOR FIRST ROUND.
