MARLBOROUGH RACES.

TRESHAAI’S CUP. (Special to the “Star.”) BLENHEIM, February 25. The Alarlborough-Nelson racing circuit was opened at Waterlea to-day, when the Alarlborough Racing Club commenced its summer meeting under beautiful weather conditions. The track was a trifle on the hard side, but was exceptionally fast and some good times were put up. The totalisator handled £9662, a deficiency of £697 compared with the corresponding day last yeai*. A nice even field of eleven were saddled up for the Novices’ Hack Race. Of these’ Sasham, on the strength of his showing at Trentham, was made a fairly warm favourite, the next best favoured being Kyla. Kyla and Royal Game, with Talcaka in attendance, showed the way to the straight. Rounding the bend Sasham put in a challenge, and, wearing down the others, was on terms with Kyla at the stewards’ stand, going on to win by a length. Takaka was a length and a half back third, and Royal Game was fourth. Royal Game went his bes't race to date. During the race Pieranda and Conviction fell. C. Eastwood; the rider of the former, was somewhat cut about and was sent to the Wairau Hospital for attention. The deflection of Enare in the Cup left xl field of six, of whom Tresham was .established a very good favourite, carrying nearly double the money on Air Ballinger's bracket, Waetea and Zero Horn*. Kalakaua was tho first out of the barrier and led past the stand, with Waetea in attendance. Round the back W.aetea took Charge and strolled away from the field, to show the way into the straight, well clear of a hunched. field. On’ce heads were turned for home Tresham challenged and wore down the leader, winning by three-quar-ters of a length. Bon Alarch was three lengths away and Kalakaua was fourth. The winner, who hails from Heretaunga, was ridden patiently by P. Al’Brearty, who judged his mount’s capabilities nicely. Tempean was sent out in the Dash Handicap backed as if the race was all over, but investors apparently underestimated Sasham’s performance in the Novices’ Race, for he was allowed to go out at a false price. Phantasy and Tempean were the first out, with Sasham handy. In the back Tempean took charge and looked like the best of good things, but .Sasham hung on and once in the straight flashed past the favourite and won very nicely by

a couple of lengths. Phantasy was nearly three lengths back third, and Sunbath was fourth. The winner’s victory demonstrates that he is settling to it .in his sixth year, and probably a few more stakes will come his xkiy. The scratching of Rouex, Misgovern and Tempean left a ..field of five in the Summer Handicap, end in accord with anticipations the Otaki-owned First Acre proved himself of better quality than the rest of the field, winning, very nicely when called on. The early running was left to. Melago and King Cheops, with the 'field bunched behind them. Entering the straight, Al’Brearty shook up First Acre, who beat the others home comfortably, winning with a bit in hand .by half a length from King Cheops, With Printemps only a neck back third and Alegalo fourth.

Aloutoa Lady and Bonatic were tho elect, for the Brookby Welter Handicap. With half the journey done, Axle had a good lead and looked like the winner. He was fighting out the , finish with Aloonl’ace when Moutoa Lady, with a lucky run on the rails, flashed past to win by a neck. Bonatic was fourth.

Rouex and Beaumont carried nearly all the money in the concluding event, Blenheim Welter Llandicap, and the public were well on the mark. Beaumont led all the way, stalling off a late challenge by Rouex to win by a neck. Probate, with a fast run, was only a neck further back, and Para was fourth.

In the Stai ; borough Trot Handicap, tho Christchurch pacer Theda led to the straight. Here Sarsaparilla got the advantage of a break by the southern horse and won by two lengths. Bon Elect was third and Molly Audubon fourth.

The Awatere Trot Handicap provided a fine finish between Vikota, owned by Air 11. E. Fuller, a local sportsman, and Dillon’s Pride, owned by Air T. Thorne, of Christchurch. The pair had the race practically on their own, racing neck and neck for nearly a mile, first one having the advantage and then the Other. Vikota was a head to the good as the post was passed. Fair Dillon was three lengths back third and Willie Parsons was fourth.
