CH.’CH. GIRL GAINS SCHOLASTIC DISTINCTION.

Miss Beryl I. Parlane, of Canterbury College, who has just been advised that she has obtained her M.A. degree, with first-class honours in botany, is a daughter of Mr E. Parlane, secretary of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union. She will be leaving Christchurch shortly to take up the position of assistant mycologist at the Cauthron Institute, Nelson, to which she was recently appointed. Miss Parlane, who is now only twenty-one years of age, has had a distinguished scholastic career. At the age of eleven she was dux of the West Christchurch School, and obtained a junior national scholarship. At thirteen she gained a senior national scholarship, and at fourteen passed the matriculation examination. She was a pupil at the Girls’ High School for two years, gaining several prizes, including the Helen Macmillan Brown Memorial Prize for Latin and English. At the age of sixteen she gained a University National Scholarship, and since then she has been at Canterbury College. She has been awarded several class prizes for botany and zoology. She obtained her B.A. degree last year.
