ROWING.

TRAINING NOTES. By “RIGGER ” I notice that the Canterbury junior four have departed from their usual course and are doing fast work. They are getting a lot of pace out of the boat. Stroke still rolls a trifle. This club’s maiden four are rrfoving along better, and should train into a good crew. Union’s maiden four are shaping well, except two, who still has an ugly style and mars what would otherwise be a very fine quartette. Avon senior doubles do not seem comfortable in the outrigger. Perhaps an alteration of the rigging would be beneficial. Avon's challenge maiden four are improving and should give a good account of themselves on Wednesday night, when the race will be rowed. Two has an uncanny habit of taking his time from stroke’s oar instead of .from the back of three's neck. 2*4 5-> Union’s 3*ouths’ four were going well up till the midde of the week, when some of the members had to go into camp. Camp hits the youths hard and shortens the time for getting ready for a race. Canterbury and Avon also have men away in camp. Avon's junior four are improving and should make a great race of it for second place. 5*4 5*4 t*4 he senior four have not been out during the week, which is a pity, as they will need all the training they can get. 2-4 -=5 2-4 Union's maiden sculls are going along very nicely and so too are Canterbury's youths’ sculls. These two boys should give Avon’s pair a great shake, and. if what I hear is true, Union will have a pair to be reckoned with. It is said that Rogers will be able to row again this season. Whittington and Duggan continue to improve in their sculler and are quite pretty to watch. They will have to be reckoned with at regattas. •*j :-4 Union's senior four are going along very nicely, but their juniors are conspicuous by their absence. Will they be rowing at the Christchurch Regatta? It is expected that the Sumner-Red-cliffs Club will enter crews at Christchurch in the youths’ and maiden doubles and light-weight four and possibly the maiden fours. Woods and Hill, the youth's doubles, are shaping really well, and are expected to spring a surprise on the river crews at the regatta. The club has a real good lightweight crew in A. Sutherland, P. Keegan, H. Shearman and H. Truscots. Keegan’s association with the Akaroa Club should be valuable in this crew. The crew might be better balanced if two and bow changed, seats. THE SPORT IN CHRISTCHURCH. To the Editor. Sir, —I notice that, your contributor “Rigger" has a reference to my previous letter on the decadence of rowing in Christchurch. If that letter has succeeded in stirring up the local heads to a sense of their responsibilities and active members to a realisation of their duties to the sport they follow, then my object has been accomplished. For years I have never wavered in my belief that rowing will not attain its proper place amongst our virile sports until the Christchurch Regatta is held on the Avon in the form of a Henley Regatta. These regattas have proved an enormous boon to rowing wherever they have been established. Consequently local followers of the sport who possess an earnest desire to see it progress should get in touch with those who are working with the object of improving the Avon, and who aim to have in that improvement a suitable regatta course. While thanking your contributor for his desire to get in touch with me, I would say that the one to approach is Mr R. B. Owen, with whom I have had several most interesting talks on the question of establishing a Henley-on-Avon.—l am, etc., STROKE-OAR.
