MAYOR BAILED UP BY CRIMINALS.
“ PUT UP YOUR HANDS ” WAS THE COMMAND. SYDNEY, January 20. George Canale (21) and Thomas Edwin Sutton (21) were remanded at the Central Police Court on a charge of having, while armed with a revolvei and sandbag, assaulted George Charley Gollen, Mayor of Auburn, with intent to rob him ol' thirty-two keys and other articles. Canale and Sutton were also remanded on £IOO bail on a charge of having broken and entered the residence of Gollen and of. having stolen jewellery worth £6O. The police prosecutor, in asking for a remand to Parramatta Court, said that Gollen was proprietor of a picture show, and he usually took the money home in a motor-car. On the night of the alleged assault accused bailed him up when he arrived at his garage. One of the men, it was said, had a loaded revolver. “Put up your hands and hand over your keys! 7 ’ was the command given to Gollen. who ignored it. Assistance was called, and the two men ran away. After the a* rest of the accused, the police prosecutor added, a loaded revolver and a sandbag were found. It was believed that one of the accused was a former member of the American Navy.
