OBJECTION TO A WOMAN JUROR.
COURT ORDERS NEW TRIAL FOR BURGLARY. ’(Special to the “Star.”) LONDON, December 11. The Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday ordered a new trial and quashed the conviction in the case of Henry Williams, who appealed against his conviction for housebreaking and sentence of four years’ penal servitude at the Surrey Sessions. The Court found that the appellant’s right to object to being tried by a •woman juror was: ignored when he challanged her. When women were being called on the jury Williams objected. He was asked if he objected simply because the juror was a woman, and he replied. “ Yes.” Whereupon the Chairman of the Sessions said the objection could not prevail. The Lord Chief Justice: He might have said, “ I don't like the expression on that person's face.” (Laughter.) Mr Percival Clarke said the Director of Public Prosecutions did not deny that the appellant’s right to object should not have been ignored, and that he was entitled to be tried before a jury to which he did not object. The appellant was* ordered to be kept in custody pending the new trial.
