SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT OF THE ” STAR.”

PERSONAL. On the occasion of his approaching marriage, Mr' T. O’Donnell was presented with a handsome dinner service from the employees of F. Mathieson, Lincoln Road, early this week. In making the presentation, Mr Mathieson spoke of the high esteem in which the recipient was held by his fellowemployees. Mr C. Ilardingham, of 90*. Barrington Street, Sprevdon. has been appointed the South Island selector for the New Zealand Rugby League team to visit England this 3-ear. Miss N. • Thomas and Master A. Thomas, of Bletsoe Avenue, have returned home after spending an enjoyable holiday at Dunedin. ADDINGTON BOY SCOUTS. Twenty-six sun-tanned faces beamed when the '■ special train which brought the members of the Addington Boy Scout troop back to Christchurch from the Dunedin. Scout Jamboree . steamed into the station last. Sunday evening. The boys were all in the best of health and spirits, and, although it was good to get back, it, was with regret that it was realised that the muchanticipated and greatly-enjoyed jamboree was over. It is felt that the Addington Boy Scouts ably represented Christchurch boyhood, for, although outclassed in' age, height and size as far as . athletics were concerned, the Addington troop were mentioned three times 'in “camp orders” as being the most efficient camping unit and as having the best knowledge of scoutcraft. Of the prizes which the Christchurch Local Association promised to the most useful and popular boys among the Christchurch scouts who attended the jamboree, Patrol-Leader Robert Hore, of the Seagull Patrol, qualifies for first place as far as the Addington Boy Scouts are concerned. Assistant-Scout-master Clarence Clarke, Cubmaster Ron Patterson and Troop-Leader Eric Collins were also of invaluable assistance in the management of the troop. The . Exhibition was a great educational opportunity. WEST SPREYDON SCHOOL. One of the most successful gatherings ever held in Spreydon took place last Wednesday evening in the West Spreydon School, Lyttelton Street, to commemorate the opening of the new school on February 1. Close on 400 dancers and euchre players' attended, and the committee is to be congratulated on the manner in which the function was carried out. Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., in declaring the school open, remarked that he was very pleased to see such a large attendance. He wished the school and the committee every success. Thanks are due to the ladies who collected the baskets and for the manner in which they worked to make the function a success. The prize-win-ners were as follow: Ladies—Mrs Leggett 1, Mrs Robinson 2; men—Mr Gilpin 1, Mr John 2; consolation—Mrs Blake wa\- and Mr Young; lucky spot waltz—-Miss' Harrison and Mr Jackson. The singing of “Auld Lang Sync” concluded a very enjoyable and successful evening. The children on being enrolled will be informed of the books required, and the parents are, therefore, asked to wait before buying any books whatever. SPREYDON CRICKET CLUB. * Sprej-don, playing against Old Bovs at Spre3'don Park last Saturda}*, made 154 runs in their first innings—A. Cross 36, J. Warded 31, H. Moore 23 not out. „ Old Bo\*s in the first innings made 52, Felton 1(J being the only pla3*er to reach double figures, while in their second innings the}- have four wickets down for 42 runs. Ellis and Pa\- were the successful bowlers for Spre\-don, and Coleman and Holmes for Old Bovs. CHRISTCHURCH SOUTH LABOUR PARTY. The annual meeting of the above was held last Tuesday evening, the president (Mr J. Dickson) presiding over a fair attendance. It was decided to send a letter of condolence to Mr TI. Karnshaw on the death of his father. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr J. Dickson; vicepresident, Mr Dell, secretary, Mr R. Garters; treasurer, Mr Coloymion; auditors, Messrs Parlane and Earnshaw; delegates to the Labour Representation Committee, Miss Thorn and Mr Archer. Mr J. K. Archer was elected delegate to the conference. IMPERIAL BOWLING CLUB In the rink games for the Henry Wood Qup. P- Woods’s rink defeated Tanner’s, while- Dudle3 r 's rink defeated Meggett’s. In the Fox Cup competitions IJeatlv defeated liewson and Dowriie. The second draw has been completed for the Corson Bowls. The cup presented by Mr Henry Wood is now on view for a short period at the Sports Depot, High Street.' MOTOR TRIP. The gathering of the staffs from aii the flour and oat mills, held at Selwvn Iluts last Saturday, was a great success in ever}' respect. The journey was made b}' motor and the weather was perfect. Sports were indulged in b\ r all, * arid the. children received prizes.

CRICKET. On .Saturday last the Sunn>-side Club completed its match with Greens A. Sunn}*side gained a first innings win thus putting them at the top of the Cit\' and Suburban Championship. Thev- are one point in lead of Greens. Greens first innings total was 154, and Sunn}'side replied with 202, gaining 42 runs over Greens. The’ not out nian for Suriri\-side, R. Langford, carried his score to 47 before he --s beaten. H. Robinson made 23 in fast cricket,, hitting a beautiful six. A. Mackic, sen., pla}-ed good cricket, and his 46 not out was a valuable score for his side. 11. Batten 11, was the best score for Sunnysidc. Greens opened with W., Lawson and J. Lamb. The former was run out when his score was only I,'but Lamb's score was 4.9 before H. Thompson took a good catch on the deep-field boundarv. P. Peacock and Cowlin put 92 on before Cowlin was well beaten with a beauty from Mackie, sen. This closed Greens second innings with six wickets down for 162 runs. The bowlers who were most successful for Greens were:—A. Harry, three wickets for 26 runs; J. Lamb, two for 48; Keenan, two for 30; R. Pitt, one for 26; A. Pott, none for 15; B. Morris, one for 22. For Suntwside— Gwilliam, two for 50; A. Mackic, s en„ three for 26. EUCHRE PARTY. A euchre part y was held in the Addington Swimming Club’s pavilion on Saturday, January 23. The attendance was small, but the committee hopes to have a more successful turn out at a later date. The prize-winners were: Ladies—Mrs Clark 1, Mrs Chas Fisk 2; men—Mr E. Crook, sen., 1, Mr Taylor 2. • SPREYDON BAPTIST CHURCH. The Sunday School will resume on Sunda;y' next, January 31. After a month’s holida}’, the children are looking forward to again meeting - the teachers and fellow scholars, and have keen anticipations of the coming prizegiving. The Rev E. E. Smith will be back on Sunday next. Special * services will be held on Sunday, the pulpit being taken both morning and evening by the pastor. The special attraction at the evening service will be “an evening, among the old favourite hymns.” The history and influence of great hymns will be dealt with,, and old favourites will be sung as solos, arid congregational h}*mns.
