TO IMPROVE SAMOAN TRADE

AIM TO MAKE COUNTRY INDEPENDENT OF N.Z. Per Pres* Association. AUCKLAND, January 30. General Richardson, Administrator of Samoa, left for Apia to-day by the Tofua. Interviewed previously, he said that he was well satisfied with the results of his visit to New Zealand, many matters having been satisfactorily dealt with. He was optimistic as to the future of Samoa, and was of opinion that the recent storm would not seriously affect the progress of the territory. He was going back to initiate schemes approved by the Government for enlarging and improving New Zealand estates, which he hoped would be the means of making Samoa financially independent of this Dominion in a few years. A proper carrying ship to convey fruit to New Zealand was a vital necessity to the progress of the territory. It was a matter that would have to be dealt with very soon.
