NOTES ON THE SWIMMING.
(Special to the* " Star. 1 ’) NAPIER, January .2? The biggest surprise of the SSOyds race was the magnificent swimming of I.hnclsay, the Canterbury representative. That Baird would win was a foregone conclusion, and it had been expected that either L. Hill or E. V. Cunnold would be in the next places. It was Enwright, as usual, who made the early pace, and he held the lead and forced a merry gallop for over 400 yards. At the end of the next lap Baird drew level wiLh Enwriglit^_and Just behind
was Lindsay, who had been hanging on doggedly to the Auckland champion. Then the pace-making fell to* Baird, whom Lindsay continued to pursue closely with remarkable pertinacity. The remainder of the field dropped back while these two fought out the issue. It was always quite clear that Baird must win, but it was equally clear that Lindsay had altogether too much pace for either Enwright or Cunnold. With a lap and a bit to go Baird put in his accustomed sprint and drew rapidly shead. Enwright tried in vain to pull up on Lindsay, but the Christchurch swimmer finished very strongly, and took second honours by a substantial margin. Lindsay’s time was 12min 11 l-ssec, and Enwright’s 12min 16 The final of the Intermediate Girls 220yds Championship was a thriller. Tt furnished surprises, both as to its result and the manner of its swimming. Miss .Tepson, of Dunedin, and Miss Farqnhar, of Auckland, had been the popular fancies, but both were left out of the contest in a battling finish that brought the big crowd of spectators cheering to their feet. At the 100 yards mark Miss Miller had the lead, wjth the others nearly level. Eor another length Miss Miller continued to increase her advantage slightly. After 133 yards had been covered Miss Champion drew out from Misses Jepson and P'arquhar and went after Miss Miller, whom she caught at the 166 yards mark. Thereafter it was a grim battle, the pair fighting out the issue stroke for Stroke amid vociferous barracking from the crowd. At the final turn the leading pair were on terms and they alternated in the lead over the last twenty yards. Miss Miller proved the stronger over the last few yards and won by a touch. Calder gave. a magnificent exhibition in winning the men’s diving championship. His work was more consistent than that, of the other competitors, though both Walker and Hicks were brilliant at times. The firsT stage of the ladles’ diving championship produced some really magnificpn® diving, the work of the girls being even better than that of the men. Magnificent dives were given by Misses Morrison, Foote. Hood and Jones, but Miss Copplestone was not quite so successful. The indications are that the end of the first stage lias left. Miss Foote with a slight advartt-

Herd went to the front, and thereafter it was merely a question of how much he would win hy. The time was comparatively slow, due to the fact that Herd was not in good form, having Buffered a slight sunstroke. M’Kenzie was the only ether competitor to finish, and thereby scored the Manawatu Centre's first point for the championship shield. For the first time in the historv of New Zealand championships there was. a. swiraover in a championship, when Miss Gladys Pidgeon. of Auckland, the holder of the faced the starter alone in the ladies’ L ~oyds breaststroke championship. The game started at a great cace. and after Hawke s Bay had put in an initial rush. Canterbury put in two hot attacks, and tho Hawke s Bay goalkeeper saved twice in succession. Smith ended a series of Canterbury attacks by a. eliot which, though rather weak, found the net. Then, after a lot of scrambling nlav.
