YACHTING.
SANDERS CUP. The third Sanders Cup trials was sailed at Lyttelton this morning. Therj was a Good tide and a light north-easi breeze. A large number of yachting enthusiasts watched ine racing from the Gladstone Pier and other points of It. Sinclair vas in charge of the Linnet 11.. G. Andrews Sidled the Betty, S. Toon.ev .sailed the Usher, and i„. Rour.d the Secret. The four conteatafhts crossed the line together uud made straight for the Pile Light, the times being?:—=lire. min. soc. Usher 29 lo Tannet II 1° 29 li Betty 10 29 IS Secret 10 29 26 On rounding the pile all stood on the port tact for a short distance, the Usher continuing the port tact for a vhilo longer. The others put about to starbo rd, stax.ding towards the western breakwater. In the meantime, the Usher put about to starboard and lost ground. The Linnet. Betty, and Secret made it short port board and a short one to starboard. A board to port brought them up between Diamond Harbour ar.d Purau Point. Secret was first about, followed by Usher and Betty, the Linnet continuing on up to the shore to get a lead. All stood oil shore, the Linnet making one short board for about two minutes Linnet. Usher and Secret put about to starboard, but Betty continued cm to port. Short boards followed to diake the Ripa Island buoy. Good manoeuvring gave the Betty n. lend on the Linnet. The positions and times at the Ripa Island buoy were:— hrs. min. sec. i Linnet II 11 2* ° j? Betty !1 *9 Usher 31 SS 0 west and a lead was made straight back, to the Pile. Light pile. Betty shortened the Linnet’s lead from 4min 20 sec to 40sec. Pile Light times were:— hrs. rein. sec. : Linnet 31 50 S 3 Betty "11 5 1 £ Secret 11 53 Sa Secret 13 1 0 Both Linnet and Betty hoisted them leading Jibs making for Ripa Island ffuo'*, which they rounded as follows; — hrs. min. sec. I Linnet ‘2 14 So j Betty 12 • Usher 12 £3 0 Betty, on the run down to the. finishing post, gained on the Linnet ar»d passed her off Ripa Island. The Linnet became becalmed, allowing Betty to run by 5 minutes 25 seconds. ' The finishing times were;— Betty 3 2 32 20 Linnet 3 2 2$ « Secret 12 45 10 Usher did not finish. The fourth race will start at S o'clock.
