Cable Association. j (Received December 26, 12.30 t>.m.) j MELBOURNE, December 26. ; Constable Clare, the victim of the j stabbing affray at North Melbourne, j was stabbed to the heart in front of j crowds of Christmas shoppers. Clare was off duty and in plain i clothes. He met ’two other plain \ clothes men, and they saw a number ! of Italians quarrelling. As Clare passed, one of the Italians bumped him, and before he could defend himself he was knocked down. While lie was on the ground several ! of the Italians struck him. j Other police came to his assistance * and a large crowd gathered, but did • not help the police.
