SITE FOR NEW NURSES’ HOME.

HOSPITAL BOARD OFFERS £3500 FOR SECTION OF PARK The site for the new nurses’ home was considered at a special meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board held this morning. The meeting was held as the result of a conference between the Hospital Board, the Domains Board and the Acclimatisation Society. Most of the discussion was in committee and on resuming the chairman, Mr 11. J. Otley. reported that the finding was as follows: “That the committee recommends the payment of £3500 to the Acclimatisation Society as replacement value of the assets on that portion of the domain occupied by the society. The board would then have received from the Domains Board an area sufficient to accommodate the new* Nurses' Home.” During the discussion, it was stated that the area to be taken over was an acre ami three-quarters, hut the Hospital Board would hand back to the Domains Board an area of eight acres on the kitchen garden ’* site. Included in the Acclimatisation Society’s property was a. hatchery valued at about £IOOO which Dr Pearson considered could be used for the breeding of Guinea pigs. During the discussion the proposal of the committee was opposed by Messrs E. TI. Andrews, F. Horrell. It. Evans. W. J. Walter. W. E. and GArmstrong, and Mrs A!’Combs. Mrs J. M'Combs moved and Mr W. J. Walter seconded as an amendment that the Hospital Board take immediate steps to acquire land other than the public park to erect a nurses’ home and that alternative sites be submitted to the next meeting of the board. The amendment was lost by nine votes to five and the report of the committee adopted.

The matter is final as far as the Hospital Board is concerned but the Acclimatisation Society and Domains Board must concur before action can be taken.

The piece of land referred to is that portion immediately bordering the Hospital on the east end along Riccarton Road.
