MAORIS WILL HAVE SEPARATE DIOCESE.
NATIVE OR WHITE BISHOP TO BE APPOINTED. The appointment of a bishop to the Maori race is assured, and a synodical oiganisation created. The name of the new Maori diocese will be “Aotearoa.” A special session of the General Synod of the Church of the Province of New Zealand has for the past two days had under consideration a proposal to appoint a separate diocese and bishop tor the Maori people. A bishop, either European or Maori, is to be appointed by the Maoris in concert with the bishops of the province. Miners to Take Ballot. The West ('oast miners have decided to take another ballot in connection with the holiday on “ back ’’ Saturdays. The State miners have been notified that the five-day week must be discontinued. The majority of mine workers do not want a stoppage, as at the present time the mines on the West Coast are working full time, and have more orders than can be supplied. The Blackball mine had two special trains loaded with coal despatched on Tuesday. Plague of Mice. A plague of mice is creating havoc in flower gardens in the Reefton district. Sweet pea seeds appear to be particularly pleasing to the mice, which dig up the seeds. Counter-attacks with poison are contemplated by gardeners.
