Miss Alice M’Laren, Highfield, has returned to Timaru from Christchurch. Mrs Mayne arrived in Christchurch yesterday after a short visit to Mrs F. A. Raymond, Bcvcrlcv Road, Timaru. Miss Zeislcr and Miss Hulda Zeisler arrived in Christchurch yesterday and are the guests of Mrs W. IT. Orbell. Mrs George Helmore, Fendalton, will leave Christchurch this evening for the North Island. Miss A. Pilliet has returned to Christchurch from an extended holiday abroad. Mrs T. Cowlishaw has returned to Christchurch from an extended holiday abroad. Mrs Freddie Cracroft Wilson, ITawarden, is spending a few days in Christchurch. Captain Sommerville, D. 5.0., R.X.. and Mrs Sommerville arc the guests of the Misses de V Sanders, Worcester Street West. Mrs Philip Osmond, Waikato, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs Samuels, Fendalton, returned to the north last evening. Mr and Mrs G. L. Rutherford (C.'onnamara) and Mrs G. Leslie Rutherford (Macdonald Downs) are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr and Mrs F. M. Warren, Mr and Mrs J. Clarkson, Miss D. Warren and Miss Rosamund Wood motored back to Christchurch yesterday from Timaru. Mrs T. Armstrong, who went to Auckland to meet her sister. Miss C. Taylor, has returned to Christchurch. Miss Taylor has been on an extended holiday abroad and is now staying with relatives in Christchurch.
The engagement is announced ot Molly, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs C. W. Seymour, “Dhura-Deizle,” Fendalton, to William Thomas, eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs W. B. Cowlishaw, Christchurch. The following arc guests at the Hotel Federal:—Mr H.. Patience and Mr William Ewan (Wellington). Mr A. Clarke (Auckland), Mr D. B. Wallace (Remuera), Mr and Mrs E. Jackson (Nelson), Mr and Miss Jackson (Picton), Mrs Goodwin (Blenheim). "Mr J. IT. Cock’s concert party- gave a delightful concert in the Parish Hall. Shirley, on Wednesday night. The proceeds are in aid of the camp fund of the newly formed St Stephen's Church Boy- Scout Troop. There was a good attendance. Those who assisted in the concert were: -Misses E. Skurr, A. and R. Lucas, N. Nelson, Messrs R. Clarke, D. E. Colville, J. 11. Cocks, Lottie Colville and Natalie Cocks. Mrs Cocks was accompanist. The piano was lent by Messrs Robert Francis and Co. A successful concert in aid of the Methodist Church Trust fund was given in the Community Hall at Redcliffs on Tuesday evening by a concert party- organised by Mr S. IT. Maddren, of Christchurch. A splendid programme consisted of the following items:— Pianoforte trio, Mesdames Storie, Black and Miss E. Kay; humorous song. Mr G. Macpherson; song Mr G. B. Rawlinson; bagpipes solo, Mr W. M'Kellow; song, Miss S. Marshall; humorous recitation, Mr L. J. Mitchell; song, Mrs A. Black; violin solo, Miss E. Kay; song, Mr L. Rickard; ventriloquist item, Mr A. Elliott; songs, Miss C. Christian, Mr A. Sharp; duct, Mrs Black and Miss E. Kay; humorous item, Mr S. Ileyder; song, Mr S. Say-ers; humorous item, Mr L. J. Mitchell; duet, Messrs Sharp and Rawlinson; song, Mrs Black; magician, J\lr A. Elliott. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Storie and Miss E. Kay. After the concert the performers were entertained to a dainty supper, which was supplied by the Ladies’ Guild. On Wednesday night . .after the IlayWarren wedding. Mr and Mrs H. W. Hay gave a dance at their residence. Mrs 11 ay wore a black frock woven with gold threads and embroidered Oriental bands at foot. Mrs F. M. Warren (Christchurch) black chiffon taffetas, Mrs Bruce Hay, and rainbow shaded marocain; Mrs Wensley Clarkson (Oamaru), flame coloured satin and georgette; Mrs E. G. Kerr, rust coloured beaded frock: Mrs Maurice Le Cren, cream embossed georgette with bands of white fur; Mrs Mulligan (Ashburton). gold tissue and heavy gold lace; Miss Rosamund Wood and Miss Dora Warren (Christchurch). their bridesmaids frocks of the afternoon; Miss Ethel Le Cren, green and silver shot llama, ydke and scarf of cream lace; Miss Brenda Newman, beige lace frock caught at hem with rose coloured beige and georgette roses; Miss Leslie Laidlaw (Dunedin), flame satin and georgette; Miss A. M’Laren, blue beaded tunic frock over silver tissue; Miss L. Cartwright, pink anti gold brocade, hem of brown fur; Miss Joyce Jones, rose coloured marocain beaded in crystal; Miss D. Macdonald, shaded green georgette; Miss J. Paterson, lemon georgette and gold lace; Miss Molly' Murray, beige lace frock; Miss M. Gabites, black georgette': Miss 11. Garland, scarlet georgette, bands of brown fur; Miss M. Gibson, black ninon frock; Miss L. Scott, pale cyclamen marocain, embroidered in beads; Miss C. Walton, blue marocain with rose coloured applique on shoulders; Miss Hay (Auckland) black chiffon velvet; Miss Corson (Oamaru), apricot georgette: 'Miss B. Webster, black georgette appliqued at foot with Oriental shades. At the Canterbury College courts yesterday afternoon a very- enjoy-ablc progressive tennis party, organised byMrs X. Friberg and Mrs C. L. Hart, was held, and each guest-contributed a coin towards a fund for providing Christmas* cheer for children of St Saviour’s Orphanage. Tht^, players were: Mesdames Friberg, J. G. Lord, J. I. Rovds, Fleetwood, Pipe, Schneider, T. Macgibbon. Roy Alacgibbon, Hugh Hamilton. Edwin Hamilton, William Goss, jun.. IT. Perry, Flint, W. 11. Clark, J. G. Collins, Douglas Anderson, Donald M’Donald, Bonar Lindsay, Harold Harman, Bullock, Misses Bromley- Cocks. Oxley (2), Sy-lvia Goss, D. Ronaldson (Opawa), Nancy Hartley-, Matheson Reed, Doris Webb, K. Buckhurst, P. Bowring and Mary Ross. The weather was ideal for tennis, and many good games were enjoyed, the winners being Miss Reed (Opawa) and Mrs Flint. A sumptuous afternoon tea, under the management of Airs Ilart, was greatly enjoyed.
A CHRONICLE OF SOCIAL EVENTS
Mr and Mrs D. R. Ogih-y, of Weilington .arc among the recent arrivals registered at the Clarendon Hotel. Airs Leslie Jameson, of Rotherham, is spending a few days in town and is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Air and Mrs Harold Brown, of Wellington. arrived from the north to-day. and are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Air and Airs J. T. Jamieson and Air and Airs J. R. Al’Rac. Timaru. who have been spending several days in Christchurch, left for their home in Timaru to-day. A garden fete organised by Nurse Baxter, y/ill take place at the Rhodes Convalescent Home. Cashmere, on Saturday- afternoon. There will be many attarctive stalls and amusements for all.
