BIG CLASH AT OCEAN ISLAND.

MORE SERIOUS THAN AT FIRST THOUGHT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 3. Mr Ellis. New Zealand representative of the British Phosphates Company, has sent a further cablegram to the effect that the clash between the Chinese and Kanakas on Ocean Island was more serious than was at first apparent. It is stated that the Chinese smuggled a quantity of firearms ashore. As a result ten Kanakas were wounded. The extent of their injuries is not stated. An offer of help from the British ship, Pearlmoor was declined. An offer was made to send eight armed constabulary from N’gauru, but it is not stated with what results. The Laburnum left for Ocean Island this morning.
