Racing and Trotting.

NOTES BY

ARGUS.

Acceptances lor the first clay of the South Canterbury Jockey Club s spring meeting will close at eight o’clock tonight. * * * * The New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on December 1 2 and 10, has attracted a fine list of nominations. It is a very popular meeting, with owners and public, and the general rule of large fields will be well maintained next month, while another pleasing feature is that quality is we.l represented. * * * * As a re-u’t of negotiations with the committee of the New Brighten Trotting Club. Mr L, G. King, the owner of iiie champ on pacing mare Onyx, has agreed to send her out in an attempt to break the mile and a half record. Til is will be an additional attraction at the club’s meeting next month, and cs there is no more popular performer on local trotting tracks her recordl.reaking effort will he watched with great interest. In the event of the conditions being favourable, it will take place on the first day of the meeting. and failing that on the second day. _ The MethVen Racing Club’s meeting, which will be held on Saturday," December 3. has attracted a great list rf nominations. There are seventeen horses in the Methven Cup. and, apart from numbers, they are an exceptionally good lot. while all the other events on the. programme have also filled well. The fact of the meeting being held at Riccarton has doutbless influenced owners in patronising it so liberally, and it should prove a highly successful fixture in every way. • + * <» The two-year-okl colt Martian Spear has been purchased from his breeder, Mr D. M'Ciure. by Mr G. Fulton, who has placed the youngster in H. Nurse’s stable. He is by Grey spear from the Martian mare Ada Meriing, who is best known as the dam of Red Wink. :-c :!: * R. Longley has recommissioned the four-year-old Armchair, by Autummis from Fairhaven, after a six months’ spell. ★ * *■ * The hurdler Red Kriss has been sent back to his owner in Otago. He will be spelled for a few months, after which B. Scoullar will take him in hand again in time for late autumn and winter meetings. * * * * Commendation and Lysander, the chief two-year-old winners of the present season, were both bred by Mr G. M. Currie and their dams arc closely related. When Mr Currie imported the Cicero mare Eulogy she was in foal to Coriander, by Spearmint from Admiration, the dam of Pretty Polly. The result was the fillv Pennon, whose Absurd foal of 1923' is now known Lysander. Eulogy herself bred several smart gallopers to Absurd and on a change to LimonJ she produced Commendation. * "> •-!- -* Te Kara was unable to start at Riccarton after the New Zealand Cup, and according to northern reports some months may elapse before he is fit to race again. * * * * At a meeting of stewards of the South Wairarapa Trotting Club, held this week, the North Island Owners’ Association asked the club to consider putting forward its meeting to a date in January, in order not to clash with the Auckland meeting. It was decided to reply that the .club could not see its way clear to alter the date. The Australian crack, Windbag, has won £27.307 in stakes, a total he should considerably augment before the close of this season. He is now fifth on the list of big winners in Australia and New Zealand, those in front of him being Gloaming £43.100, Eurvthmic £36,891. David £31.670, and Carbine £29,626. * * * * An Australian writer mentions that it is somewhat remarkable that Windbag should t>e beaten at his first run after the Melbourne Cup, a race that ended the winning career of many horses. Without going further back than the. four Cups- prior to that of last week. Sister Olive. Bitalli and Backwood did not win subsequent to that race, and Poitrel only once.

OTAHUHU TROTS. TO-MORROW'S PROSPECTS. (Special to the “ Star.’ ) AUCKLAND, November 20. The conditions are promising for the Otahuhu Trotting Clubs spring meeting. which opens to-morrow. The track is in excellent order, being hard and fast, and good times should be recorded. A number of visiting horses, including Orion, Sunny Jim, Audacious, Harris, Sister Beatrice. Kokiritea, Ben Chau. Bob Logan and Talaro, have arrived. The work at Alexandra Park yesterday was full of interest. Among the horses who worked well were Florrie Bingen. Nelson Tasker. Ben Ohau. Moko Glandore, Dean Dillon.. Nikora. Firpo, Tranquil. j All of the Jellicoe Handicap candidates. with the exception of Or.uarangi. have reached headquarters. Oruarangi has been working well at Te Awamutu and he is expected to-day. The form at the Auckland Trotting Club's spring meeting suggests Talaro and Goldman as being two of the hardest to beat. Orion and Audacious are expected to furnish them with stout opposition, both having previously won on the course. As a rule southern stables provide something good for the maiden trotters' events, but there seems to be nothing outstanding among the visitors engaged in the Introductory Handicap, unless it is Kolmar, who has two successive victories to his credit. Rita Huon, who is now in T. Roe’s stable, and Sister Beatrice read as likely as any of the others. A big field will be seen out in the Mangere Handicap, and the fancies should take a wide range. Ricardo (who hails from the south), Grattan Thorpe and Mount Albert are a trio who may find good backing. The field for the Onehunga Handicap will be one of the smallest of the day. If S- August starts both Holly Boy and Buz Buz this bracket will probably be favourite, while Heather Girl and Rua Pere will also be in demand. Bob Logan was unlucky on the second day of the Auckland meeting, and lie promises to start a warm favourite

in the Stewards' Handicap. Nelson Tasker and Bawldv Locanda are two of his opponents who have been working well. A useful field of trotters will contest the Campbell Handicap, for which Bett\’ Moko and Sunny Jim ma:-* be the favourites, while The Tartar and Ai Mack may be their most dangerous opponents. Several of the Massey Memorial Handicap candidates are engaged earlier in the day and their showing should give an indication of their chances in this event. Florrie Bingen and Nelson Fame are two who have been pleasing the track watchers. The concluding event, the President’s Handicap, has drawn a good field. Some of the acceptors who have shown ability to act in saddle afc-llal Chimes, Firpo and Tranquil. WANGANUI NOTES.

(Special to the Star.”) WANGANUI, November 19W. Bay tier intends taking Deluge, Anklet, Adaval-e, Motley and Mask to Feilding next week. Deluge lias been moving scratchily for some time past and was sore this morning, consequently lie was not worked. In these circumstances. he may not be a runner in the Feilding Stakes, in which ease Motley may start in that event in preference to the Flying Handicap. Motley is in great fettle and on her running at -Ellerslie she must be hard to boat in whatever she starts at Feilding. Anklet has comes on since racing at Ellerslie and she should be handy in her engagements. Mask is a much improved gelding and the son of Limond should not be long in getting on the winning list. The weather was fine and the tracks were fast this morning, when there were a few fast gallops. Anklet was going well within herself at the end of four furlongs, run in Company with Ada vale in 49 2-osec. Motley, with her trainer up, left four. furlongs behind in 49 1-osec, and did it very nicely. Mask, Kilburn and Elysianor, the last named with much the best of the weights, were companions in a six furlong spin. 3!ask and Elysianor jumpoff in front and were together at the end of the journey some, two lengths ahead of Kilburn. The first- three furlongs were run in 36scc and the half mile in 49*s<?c. Elysianor is an improved gelding and he should pick up a stake in the near future. Lysander, who has improved greatly of late, was under a strong pull all the way and wide out in running half a mile in 30 4-osee, with W. Rayner up. The Elysian filly in Dwyer’s the end and on the rails. Horonvea and Some Red slipped orer half a mile in 49 4-osec, finishing together. With a strong rider up Some Red should give a, good account oi' himself at Feilding. The Thorn is not engaged at Feilding and lie has keen allowed to take things a bit easy since returning from Ellerslie. He will go north again for the Derby and if he stays out the rnilO and a half he will he close up afe the finish, ns he should be bettor than ever by Christmas. In view of Demure's good showing at Waverier, it came as a surprise to many to hear what a big price she paid at Ashhuret.

WINTON RACES. NOTES OX THE RACING. (Special to the “ Star.”) INVERCARGILL. November 10. The Winton Jocke3' Club's annual meeting concluded in perfect weather, follow ing oa heavy rain overnight. The attend ance was good, the gate receipts amount ing to £299, compared with £295 on the corresponding day last year, making the total for the meeting £BOB. A rousing finish resulted in Divinial and Navy Cut recording a dead beat, Apache two lengths oft third. a bare length in front of Sunny Gold. Then came Flight. Controversy and Blue Dragoon. North ope stood on the mark. Lady Zita galloped when leading and knocked the favourite over. 'Then Jolly Chimes led Mate o' Mine. Bricklayer and Colchiel until nearing the home turn, when Logan’s Drive came with a long run to join the company. Then Valdamo, Bugle Note and Hallmark struggled home in that order. The winner, who has disappointed her connections several times this season made amends today to the tune of a remunerative price. The si ©wards held an inauiry into the

•unnine of Valdamo as compared with his ’orra on the first day. It was announced hat t.he judicial committee was not satisfied with the riding of A. S. Ellis, but there, was not sufficient evidsgice to lake action. The owner was exonerated. Of seven starters for the Soldiers' Memorial Handicap all were supported, but Tominv Dodd was most in demand, starting about £225 better fancy than Overdrawn. while Warhaven was about £l2o back third selection, followed by Happy J'avs £7 away. Warhaven. and Overdrawn made the running from Tommy Dodd and Happy Days in company. Racing to the straight Overdrawn got his head out of the bunch, but as the field came round t.he last turn Emerscn shot Tommy Dodd through on the fence to lead clear to the distance. Inside the distance Happy Days. Overdrawn ■ and then Bloom tackled the favourite. A great race home resulted in Tommy Dodd winning by a neck from Bloom, Happy Days a similar distance away just in front of Overdrawn and Beauty Light. Uncle Boh was always first selection for the steeplechase, leading Blazing Light by £SO, with Ngarata a similar amount further away third fancy.
