BOXING CLUB SECRETARY APPEARS IN COURT. Charged with displaying posters in ♦he city advertising a forthcoming boxing contest without having first obtained permission from the City Council, J antes Henry Merric appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning Mr C. S. Thomas, for Merrie, pleaded not guiltv to all the charges. Leslie Hardie. Chief City Inspector, said that several signs were erected in Christchurch without permission being given by the City Council. Permission was asked for some time after the signs were erected. The application was considered. but permission was refused. In answer to Mr Thomas the witness said that Merrie was prosecuted because he was honorary secretary of the Christchurch Sports Club, which was responsible for the posters. Mr Thomas: The thing’s ridiculous. Merrie must be proved to have put. up the signs. I can put him in the box and he will say that he didn’t know anything about these signs. It’s a ridiculous thing to prosecute him just, because he's the secretary of the Sports Club. You might as well charge the president. Mr Hardie: Someone must be prosecuted, and the club- was the responsible party. Could I have an adjournment for a week? Mr Thomas opposed the application for an adjournment.
