AXE, CROWBAR, HAMMER USED TO “CRACK" SAFE.

An axe, a crowbar and a seven-pound hammer were the weapons used by two amateur cracksmen in Timaru on Saturday night, in an unsuccessful attempt to rob a safe belonging to Mr Edward J. C. Jensen, of North Street. Entry to Mr Jensen's premises was effected by way of the window, which was completely prized off its hinges about 9 pan. The safe was apparently the cracksmen’s objective, but, being on tho large size for removal by- way of the window, the kit of tools was again brought, into operation and the door became the second victim. The safe was then removed to ? yard adjoining the coal yard, and then commenced the arduous task of bursting it open. The sides proved too tough for an axe, which was smashed, and they even proved too stout for the crowbar and the hammer. An effort was also made to burst open the door of the safe, the brass handle of which was smashed off. ; After an hour's work the cracksmen t gave in, and returned to the office. ( where the drawers were ransacked. . The burglary was discovered by Mr I Jensen yesterday morning, and fhe I police were informed. Detective IT. J. | Le Sueur and Constable Herron arrest- | ed two men, Stanley Gilbert Taylor and George Spencer Pearce, both residents of North Street,' in connection with the affair. Taylor and Pearce appeared before Mr D M’Lennan, JP„ at the Police Court this morning, charged with entering the premises of Edward Jensen with intent to commit a crime.
