AMATEUR ANi) PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS BEGUN.
Ideal golfing weather prevailed at f'hirlev this morning when the third day's play of the New Zealand championship meeting was commenced; The wind, which had caused trouble to players on Friday and Saturday, was absent, trie air being perfectly calm. ' The sun was shining brightly, and the \ Tew clouds that, were about helped to temper the heat. The morning rounds produced firstclass play, the conditions helping the players. The events being played were the amateur championship, the professional championship and the bogey handicap for amateurs. To-day's two championship events are being, played on the. “sudden death" principle, and those . who lose on the first round will be out of the 1 competitions. Perfect weather conditions this morning assisted Mlntosh in a brilliant round of 71, when playing against Ritchie in the professional championship. lie went out in SIS, made up of •1-5-4-5-44 35-4. and came home in 33, five under bogey. Such a splendid effort, shows golfing capacity of a very high order of merit, and the figures will take a lot of beating. These last nine holes were done in 4 4-4-2-4 413-4 33. In the first round of the amateur championship Scott, who was at the bottom of the qualifying round, sprung a surprise by finishing 3 up on Ewan Macfarlane. Jfe went out in 30 and came home in 38, an effort, that, was far in advance of anything he showed in , the qualifying rounds in the open uham-
