The vestry of St Peter’s Church, Upper Riccarton, launched an appeal iur about £3OOO in order to complete the building of the church in stone, states the “Church News.” St Peter’s is one of the oldest foundations in the IXoce.se. Most of the original church has disappeared. The chancel was rebuilt in stone in LS76, the transepts organ chamber and a portion of the nave were added in 1900, and to-day the only part of the historic wooden building that remains is a small portion of the west end. now reduced by time and the tireless borer to pronounced decay. Jt is proposed to replace it with stone and to add a tower and spire, at a cost of about £4200. Of this sum £I2OO is in hand, largely the result of the generosity of a few subscribers. A meeting of the parishioners in December last unanimously decided to attempt ttie completion of the church and the new vestry is now appealing not only to pre? i sent parishioners, but to all who are 1 linked to St- Peter’s by ties of baptism, j confirmation, marriage, the burial of relatives in the churchyard or any other - personal association with the church.
